| Dear Editor, I want to let the Carlinville High School basketball teams, the coaches, cheerleaders and the students who attended last Friday's basketball games at Gillespie, know how proud we all should be at the school spirit and sportsmanship you all showed in the face of the worst display of unsportsmanlike conduct I have ever witnessed anywhere. Theadministration, parents and students of Gillespie High School should be ashamed of the way an opposing team, even an arch rival, was treated in their school. The posters that were hung had nothing to do with school spirit. The dressing of Gillespie students who made fun of the Carlinville varsity players and cheering squad was really uncalled for. I have never been at any rival event when one school would disrupt the other's school song, not once but every time. But the topper of the evening was the chanting of obscenities at the officials by this group of young Gillespie fans. What is wrong with an administration who would allow this? Where were the parents? Both of you should be ashamed of how these students acted and the fact that you let it happen and, by all intents and purposes, supported it. If this type of behavior is encouraged, what comes next? In just a few short weeks, Gillespie will be coming to Carlinville. I encourage all the Carlinville students to show Gillespie how a rival school should be treated, with proper sportsmanship and school spirit. They will be on Carlinville home territory, so Cavies let's show them what you are made of on the court. Our JV and Varsity squads can hold their own with any team, we don't need to make fun of, or harass them. The school spirit shown by these young Cavies players and fans should be applauded and encouraged. We are proud of you! Judy Fenton |
