Living History Programs
The Living History Program is set around an American
Civil War Tent and Fly. A Confederate Soldier (which represents the
majority of the local soldiers of that time) there is encamped and working
on doing the 3 "R's" resting, refitting and recruiting. The setup of
the camp area is as follows: a tent with fly, a table that has several personal
items, a table with selected text books. There is a table with original
artifacts for people to see and to have some "hands on" activities. A
cot is setup to the side with a wool blanket and weapons which are reproductions
and sticks for the marching and drill exercise (time and weather permitting).
But, our greatest visual aids are "Johnny reb and Billy Yank" with
their flags and accouterments. Check'em it out, this is our big project,
the kids receive instructions, are encouraged to 'read & research' and
they even get to handle the past.

The students, in small groups, are allowed to view the tent setup.
Artifacts are in glass cases that allow them to be protected from the
weather and make them easier for transportation.
As the students look at the displays they are encouraged to read
and research in different types of books and pamphlets.
Towards the end of the visit a few are selected and briefed and then
drilled with wooden sticks. While their peers look on and judge them
sometimes.
