Leads Suffolk CC To NJCAA Women's Final

Her team turned
to her and Molly Brothers did not let the Clippers down. Suffolk CC-Selden
rode its marquee player and knocked off defending
champion College
of DuPage (Ill.), 59-46, Friday in an NJCAA Division III women's basketball
semifinal at Corning CC.
No. 4 Suffolk (24-1) scored the first eight points and never trailed against the top seed.
"We got the ball
into her and she scored the first six points," coach Kevin Foley said of
Brothers. "We had the lead the whole game and were
able to maintain
it through two dry spells."
Brothers had 32 points, 15 rebounds 8 blocks and 4 steals. She made 12-for-18 from the field and 8 of 9 free throws.
Suffolk will play
Madison Tech (Wis.) in the title game at 8 p.m. Saturday. Brothers already
has the career tournament scoring record with 149
points in five
games. Karen Geiger of Ocean County (1998-99) had the previous record of
' in six games.
Even Brothers' only
assist was big. With 10:26 left, Suffolk led by six. Suffolk's Katie Brown
hit a jumper and after a stop, DuPage (24-6) pressed.
Brothers dribbled
to midcourt and fired a pass to Katie Burke at the blocks for an easy layup
and a 10-point lead.
"It was her game,"
Foley said. "Thursday was a team game and tonight, we rode her. Now we're
in the one game everybody has dreamed about
since they were
kids."
Merrimack 88, Dowling
73: Mary Kacic had 28 points, 6 steals and 5 assists for Dowling (25-6)
in an NCAA Division II Northeast Regional
quarterfinal. Merrimack
(21-8) will face Bentley at 8 p.m. Saturday in a semifinal.
Men's Basketball
Suffolk CC-Selden
79, Montgomery College (Md.) 70: Maurice Manning hit four consecutive free
throws and Tamien Trent followed with two
more as Suffolk
scored the final six points and held off Montgomery in an NJCAA Division
III semifinal at SUNY-Delhi.
Suffolk (31-1) will
face the winner of Richland College (Texas) / College of DuPage (Ill.)
at 8 p.m. Saturday in the program's first championship
appearance. Suffolk
is riding a 17-game winning streak.
Daren Miller's back-to-back
three- pointers with 5:14 left sparked a 10-2 run that gave Suffolk a 57-48
lead. The timely three pointers came just
after Montgomery
(21-10) opened the second half with an 18-11 run to cut its deficit to
47-44.
"Those two threes
were huge," Suffolk assistant coach Eric Brown said. "But we know Miller's
going to come through with baskets for us.
We're confident
in him, he's an outstanding shooter."
Manning scored 21
points and Trent 16 for the Clippers. Marcele Street (12) and Vernon Alonzo
totaled 23.
