Reviewing Special Products and Factoring

Thursday

With our Virtual Field Trip having laid the foundation for the year, the students will begin to review special products from the past.  Today the students will learn to develop the F.O.I.L. Method using existing knowledge

Visit my Lesson Plan for more details.

Friday

After a five-minute check on the F.O.I.L. method, we will discuss how that concept relates to (a+b)2.  The common misconception is that it is equivalent to a2+b2, which will be explored by the students through the following website:

http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=127

With fifteen minutes left in class, the odd homework problems will be assigned to check their understanding of the concept.

Monday

After a five-minute check on the prior day’s material, we will discuss the concept of completing the square.  To enhance this lesson geometrically, the students will visit the following website:

http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=132

With fifteen minutes left in class, the odd homework problems will be assigned to check their understanding of the concept.

Tuesday

After a five-minute check on the prior day’s material, we will begin to discuss the concept of difference of squares using the lesson plan described at:

http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?id=L276

With fifteen minutes left in class, the odd homework problems will be assigned to check their understanding of the concept.

Wednesday

After a week of problem solving, it is time to test what we have learned.  Five teams will be randomly generated for a Jeopardy-style competition.  The students rotate through so that each student has had an opportunity to answer several questions.  The winning team gets ten extra credit points added to their next test, and each successive team gets two points less (10-8-6-4-2).

Visit my Assessment Page for the game itself.
