Tournament Preview
The field is set
for the 2003 NJCAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. Six of the
eight teams have made appearances at the NJCAA Championship, LSU @ Eunice
and Gateway Community College (CT) are making their first appearances.
Three teams are returning from last year’s tournament. DuPage
(#1 seed) returns to defend their title, as they stood tall in the NJCAA
Poll at #1 all season. Anoka Ramsey C.C. returns to fight for a fifth
national title after a two-year hiatus from the championship as the #2
seed. Passaic County C.C., holding down the #3 seed, returns for
a fourth consecutive season trying to improve on their third place finish
of a year ago. Suffolk C. C.C. is the third team to return from last
years tourney as the #4 seed.
The schedule for
Thursday, March 13 is as follows:
#1 DuPage (IL)
vs. Gateway (CT)
College of DuPage
is on their way to their 5th national championship tournament seeking their
3rd title. College of DuPage reached the tournament by defeating
Joliet Junior College 69 - 46 in the Region IV semi-final game and William
Rainey Harper College 70 - 53 in the championship game.
Gateway CC earned
their first trip to the tournament this year with a hard fought 45 - 41
win over Holyoke CC in the Region XXI championship game. Guard Jackie
Jen Baptiste scoring 16.6 points per game and dishing out 3.9 assists a
game leads the Lions. Rasheedah Newton is the main inside presence
for Gateway averaging 9.9 rebounds a game and 12.9 points. Tia Murray
does a little bit of everything averaging 10.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and
3.5 assists. Point guard Shakeria McLean scores 13.9 points a game
while running the show for the Lions.

(NY) vs. LSU @ Eunice (LA)
Suffolk CCC returns
to the tournament coming off a 48 - 36 win in the Region XV championship
game over Duchess CC. The Clippers are led by sophomore forward Molly
Brothers with an average of about 25 points per contest and grabbing just
under 13.5 rebounds a game. Brothers led the Clippers to the 4th
place finish in last years tournament scoring a new tournament high 43
points in a game against Machester CC.
LSUE advanced to
this weekend’s tournament with a convincing 74 - 59 win over Region XX
champion Montgomery College-Rockville. The Bengals were led to the
District G championship by Elizabeth Vallette (13 point tournament average),
Kayla Edwards (12.5 ppg), Katie Broussard (9 ppg, 4.2 rebounds per game),
Ashley Cormier (8.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg), and Jermaine Clark (5.8 rpg).
On the season LSUE is lead in scoring by freshman Ashley Cormier with 13.5
points a game and Krystal Thomas with an average of 8.2 points.
6:00 #3 Passaic
(NJ) vs. Madison (WI))
Passaic CCC moved
on to this years tournament with a 73 - 68 win over Keystone College in
the Region XIX playoff championship. The Panthers are returning with
only one member of the 2002 3rd place squad, but the new faces look to
pick up where last years team left off.
Madison Area Technical
College has returned to the tourney for the second time in school history
with 67 - 60 win over Vermilion Community College in the Region XIII-B
championship game. MATC won the Wisconsin Technical College Conference
title and finished runners-up in the state tournament. The Wolfpack
has a balanced attack but has been led down the stretch by Region XIII-B
Tournament MVP, Jennifer Trzebiatowski. She currently leads the team
with a 11.0 point per game average and rebounds, 5.8 per game.
8:00 #2 Anoka Ramsey
(MN) vs. Mohawk Valley (NY)
Anoka Ramsey CC
once again returns to Corning seeking yet another national title.
The Golden Rams reached the tournament by defeating Minneapolis Community
College 68 - 51 in the Region XIII-A final. Anoka Ramsey also won
the Minnesota Community College State Tournament by defeating Vermillion
CC 89 - 48.
Mohawk Valley CC
advanced to the national tournament with a 51 - 41 win over Fulton-Montgomery
CC in the Region III tournament championship. The Hawks are led by
sophomore point guard Deidra Bumbrey, the Region III Player of the Year.
Bumbrey leads the team in scoring at 18.9 points per game. Eniola
Bakare is second on the team in scoring with a 13.1 average. Bakare
led Region III in rebounding pulling down 16.1 a game. This is Mohawk
Valley's third appearance in the national tournament.
