ONLINE COMPENDIUM
BACKGROUND
Developed in
early 2046 as a replacement for the Bell AH-65 retaliator fast attack gunship,
the YAG-37 design is illusive. Although it is a variable vehicle, it is
not a fighter. It is in fact a tactical attack aircraft designed to operate
in the armor hunter/killer role.
The basic airframe of the YAG-37 is derived from the AH-65 to the point
of the new aircraft resembling its predecessor, with the only difference
being the AH-65 is a rotary wing aircraft. The YAG-37 was the winner of
the UN Army's next generation attack gunship competition held at the aviation
school at Fort Rucker, in the North American continent in early 2044. The
aircraft is a collaboration between a number of companies, with the basic
airframe conversion and redesign being carried out by a joint team from
Bell Aerospace and Shinsei Heavy Industries. Main armament was mostly a
carryover from the AH-65, with an upgrade on the avionics and fire control
system being carried out by General Dynamics.
Initial prototype testing was held by a detachment from B company 2nd
Battalion, 105th Aviation Regiment, at Fort Ord, California, which serves
as headquarters for the UN Army's Material Acquisition Command, which is
in charge of the evaluation and further development of new equipment coming
into the force. It is however, too early in the testing stages to see if
the recommendation will be made for the prototype to be put into a limited
production run, or even if funding can be appropriated from the United
Nations Government, since at this time all services are vying for a massive
upgrade to its existing combat systems.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:
-
MAULER REB-30G ANTI-AIRCRAFT PULSE LASER: The YAG-37 mounts a pair
of pulse lasers for use in air combat skirmishes and for defensive purposes.
The lasers are mounted on the head of the mecha in soldier mode, and is
located in the central dorsal section of the main body pointed forward
in fighter and gerwalk modes. The laser can only fire to the FRONT of the
fighter in these modes; it cannot be turned to fire along another arc.
-
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Anti-aircraft
-
SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-missile/defensive
-
RANGE: 4000 feet (1200 m)
-
DAMAGE: 2D4 M.D.
-
RATE OF FIRE: The lasers can be fired in rapid pulses up to 4 blasts
per round. A rapid fire blast counts as a burst of up to 4 shots.
-
PAYLOAD: Effectively Unlimited.
-
MAULER ROV-45 PULSE LASER TURRET: The YAG-37 mounts a single pulse
laser for use against ground targets and for defensive purposes. The laser
is mounted in the chest of the mecha in soldier mode, and is located below
the nose of the main body pointed forward in fighter and gerwalk modes.
The turret can rotate 180 degrees in all modes and fire to the sides of
the YAG-37.
-
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault
-
SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-mecha
-
RANGE: 4000 feet (1200 m)
-
DAMAGE: 2D6 per pulse, 1D6x10 M.D. per burst
-
RATE OF FIRE: The laser can be fired in rapid pulses up to 4 times
per round. A rapid blast consists of a burst of 4 shots and counts as one
attack.
-
PAYLOAD: Effectively Unlimited.
-
HOWARD GU-15 EXTERNAL GUN POD: The main weapon of the YAG-37 is
the new GU-22 Gun Pod produced by Howard/General Dynamic. The gun pod is
mounted on a special hardpoint below the gunship in fighter mode, and is
hand-held in gerwalk and soldier modes. Unlike the gun pods used by the
original VF-1 Valkyrie, the GU-22 uses clips of ammo instead of a self-contained
supply in the barrel of the gun. One spare clip for the GU-22 is mounted
on the back of the VAG-37's bulletproof shields on each arm; replacing
a clip takes two melee actions and can only be done in Gerwalk or Soldier
mode.
-
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault
-
SECONDARY PURPOSE: Anti-mecha
-
RANGE: 4000 feet (1200 m)
-
DAMAGE: Does 4D6 M.D. for a short burst, 1D6x10 M.D. for a long
burst, or 2D6x10 M.D. for a full melee burst (counts as two attack)
-
RATE OF FIRE: Firing short or long bursts consumes one action per
burst fired. Firing a full-turn burst consumes two actions and prevents
the gunpod from being used in any other attack that turn.
-
PAYLOAD: Each clip holds 400 rounds, equal to 40 short bursts, 20
long bursts, or 10 full melee bursts.
-
WING MOUNTED MEDIUM RANGE MISSILE LAUNCHERS: Each arm of the YAG-37
is equipped with a missile launcher that can hold up to 4 medium-range
missiles. The missiles can be fired in any mode; fighter, gerwalk, or soldier.
Any type of MRM can be used in the launchers (except the new medium range
high maneuver missile) , armor piercing are standard issue.
-
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault.
-
MISSILE TYPES: Any type of standard UN Spacy Medium
Range Missile can be used
-
RANGE: Varies with missile type, typically 40 miles (64.3 km).
-
DAMAGE: Varies with missile type, typically 2D6x10 M.D.
-
RATE OF FIRE: Volleys of 1-4 missiles per launcher. One volley counts
as one attack. If necessary, all 8 missiles can be fired in a single round
by expending two attacks.
-
PAYLOAD: 4 missiles per launcher, 8 total.
-
BIFORS ALL-ENVIRONMENT HIGH-MANEUVERABILITY MINI-MISSILE CLUSTERS:
The legs of the YAG-37 are equipped with two concealed missile bays, that
each hold up to 24 new high-maneuverability mini-missiles. When armed,
the launcher assemblies extend from the sides of the legs, allowing all
24 missiles to be fired at once if necessary. The missiles can be fired
in any mode. Any type of mini-missile can be used in the launchers, but
usually only the Bifors high-maneuverability mini-missiles are used. (NOTE:
These are NOT the medium-range versions of the high-maneuverability
missiles seen in Macross Plus #1).
-
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assault
-
MISSILE TYPES: any type of standard UN Spacy Mini-Missile,
or the new Bifors high-maneuverability
mini-missiles.
-
RANGE: 1 mile (1.6 km)
-
DAMAGE: 1D4x10 M.D.
-
RATE OF FIRE: Volleys of 1-24 missiles per launcher. One volley
counts as one attack. If necessary, all 48 missiles (!) can be fired in
a single round by expending two attacks.
-
BONUSES: +3 to strike, +1 to dodge
-
PAYLOAD: 24 missiles per launcher; 48 total.
-
HOWARD PBS-03F PIN-POINT BARRIER SYSTEM: The YAG-37 is equipped
with a new mecha-scale pinpoint barrier system for defense. The system
can generate a single pinpoint barrier that can be moved anywhere on the
mecha and used as a shield against incoming attacks. The barrier provides
100 MDC of protection, and regenerates at a rate of 50 MDC per round when
damaged. Even if destroyed by combined attacks, the shield will regenerate
itself within 2 rounds. In order to use the shield, the pilot must make
a successful parry roll to intercept an incoming attack.
-
Primary Purpose: Defense
-
Protection: 100 MDC total
-
Regeneration Rate: 50 MDC per round.
-
Size: The barrier can be up to 10 ft (3m) in diameter.
Duration: Unlimited
-
HAND TO HAND COMBAT: If necessary, the pilot of the YAG-37 can engage
in melee combat rather than use a weapon. The gunship is extremely agile
and can execute most typical hand to hand combat moves, such as punches,
jump kicks, leap attacks, rolling with impacts, etc.
DAMAGE:
-
Restrained Punch: 1D6 M.D.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE YAG-37:
-
ANTI-PROJECTION SHIELD: A new addition to modern Variable Fighters,
the YAG-37 is equipped with a pair of external shields that are mounted
on the landing struts of the mecha in fighter mode and on the arms in Battloid
and Gerwalk modes. On a successful parry in Battloid or Gerwalk mode, the
shields can be used to block missiles or projectiles, thus protecting the
main body from harm. Although constructed of super strong materials, the
shields are NOT regenerable and must be ejected once its MDC is depleted.
-
COMBAT COMPUTER W/HUD DISPLAYS: The YAG-37 is equipped with a combat
computer that can store and analyze data during combat with hostile forces.
The entire cockpit canopy of the YAG-37 is a large HUD display, which allows
the computer to display large amounts of data to the pilot and even highlight
enemies and missile attacks with overlaid graphics. The combat computer
tracks and identifies specific enemy targets, and has a database of over
10,000 images stored in memory. The computer can identify and track up
to 250 targets simultaneously.
-
ESCAPE POD: The entire reinforced cockpit of the YAG-37 is a detachable
escape pod that can be jettisoned when the mecha is destroyed. The ejected
cockpit does not contain thrusters, but does contain a powerful locator
beacon and an integrated life support system that can support the pilot
for up to 24 hours after ejection. The pod is also equipped with parachutes
in case of ejection in an atmosphere. The combat computer is programmed
to automatically eject the escape pod if the mecha is destroyed (main body
MDC reduced to 0), but this can be overridden if the pilot is feeling suicidal
for some reason.
-
EXTERNAL AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification
system that can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
-
HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration
of life threatening heat and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm
system are linked with the shields and will sound an alarm if there is
a rupture in the shields and what the levels of radiation are.
-
HOMING SIGNAL: The escape pod of the YAG-37 is equipped with a homing
device that enables rescue teams to locate a disabled craft or ejected
life pod. The range of the signal is 400 miles (640 km). Most UN Spacy
ships and variable fighters can locate and track homing signals, and the
onboard computers will automatically notify their pilots if such a signal
is detected.
-
LASER TARGETING SYSTEM: Range: 100 miles (160 km). Used for increased
accuracy in the striking of enemy targets and is partly responsible for
the mecha's strike bonus.
-
LOUDSPEAKER: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which
can be used to amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
-
OPTICS: WIDE-SPECTRUM SENSORS: Range: 2,000 feet (610 m). This new
active/passive optical system is able to view and project light from any
portion of the visible and invisible spectrum, from infrared to ultraviolet
and everything in between. Among other things, this system allows the pilot
to see in the dark or through smoke using infrared, through water or fog
using ultraviolet, and even detect heat emissions from concealed targets.
The sensors can use either an active or passive scanning mode. In active
mode, the YAG-37 actually projects a beam of light (visible or invisible)
and views the reflection off objects. In passive mode, the sensors simply
receive data without emitting light. Active mode provides more detailed
pictures, but passive mode reduces the risk of detection by IR or UV sensors.
The system provides the pilot with a bonus of +10% when tracking or trying
to detect an ambush. Results of the scans are viewed on HUD displays.
-
RADAR: 200 mile (321 km) range.
-
RADIO/VIDEO COMMUNICATION: Long range, directional communications
system with satellite relay capabilities. Range: 600 miles (960 km) or
can be boosted indefinitely via satellite relay.
-
SELF-DESTRUCT: To prevent capture of a Variable Fighter by the enemy,
the pilot can activate the VAG-37's self-destruct system, which will cause
the fighter to explode after a delay of up to 60 minutes (time is set by
the pilot). The explosive damage is contained within a 20 foot (6 m) area
and inflicts 1D6x10 M.D. to everything within the radius of the explosion.
All internal systems are obliterated. The escape pod will be automatically
ejected prior to the explosion unless the pilot overrides the ejection
sequence.
-
STANDARD SURVIVAL KIT: All UN Spacy Variable Fighters come equipped
with a portable survival kit. Inside the small reinforced box is a medium
sized flashlight, two hand flares, one rocket flare, a compass, infrared
distancing binoculars, a small mirror, a pocket knife, dehydrated and concentrated
food (can be stretched into a five day supply for one person) and basic
first aid items (aspirin, bandages, disinfectants, etc.)
-
TACTICAL LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The VAG-37's cockpit is pressurized,
and also provides additional air feeds to the pilot's flight suit that
provides him with pressurized breathing. The UN Spacy flight suit also
contains an upper and lower g-suit that promotes blood circulation even
during high-g turns, thus decreasing the possibility of pilot's blacking
out in combat.
