After SW-1, the Gunfighters remained at Macross City U.N. A.F.B. However, despite having the highest state of readiness in the entire UNAF, the 366th saw little action since putting down the last Terran uprising at the end of the first quarter of the new millennium. The leaders of the Macross government were unwilling to send away their best and closest means of defense. With few exceptions, the 366th remained at Macross City almost exclusively. These exceptions included the frequent competitions held by the U.N. Armed Forces. The most recent of which was "Desert Flash '48," held annually in the deserts of the planet Eden. All of the 366th's squadrons ranked in the top ten by the end of the competition. While the highest scoring individual pilot was a Space Marine, the 366th Wing represented the best example of team work and group skill at the competition. The 366th maintains the skills of it's pilots by constant and rigorous training schedules. Many pilots are cycled around the various frontier and experimental units in order to keep them on the cutting edge of their profession.
During the "Sharon Apple Incident" most of the 366th was on live-fire maneuvers at Mars Base. They were angry at missing the concert of the millennium. Those who stayed on Earth suffered the same fate as the rest of the Terran defense forces. They became hypnotized by the magical singing of the virtual idol called Sharon Apple. Many scientists and spiritia warfare experts believe Sharon had figured out a means of generating spiritia reactions in those who listened to her music. When Lt. Isamu Dyson "killed" Sharon, the brave but incapacitated Terran defenders "woke up." And the Gunfighters on Mars were relieved that they "didn't miss anything after all."
With the conclusion of the Macross 7/Varuta war, the 366th was faced with the certainty that other protoculture fragments existed, as did the need to be able to deploy a large capable force to deal with them. The new president of the U.N. Council agreed to the Gunfighter Commanding General's request to redefine the 366th's warfighting role. The Gunfighters received a larger share of the overall UNAF budget and began re-equipping all of it's units with space fold capable variable vehicles ( with the exception of the 22nd ARS, who already were equipping with the MS-60 Pave Sky fold-capable Stealth Assault Shuttle, and later with the MS-42 Sky Mule). By 2048 the entire Wing had been successfully converted to the new state of the art units. Now the Gunfighters are standing up to deploy against the recently encountered Varuta splinter fleet, encountered by the Macross XV mission. Most of the gunfighters are unaware as to the nature of their increased training schedule as the whole thing is still quite classified. So unaware and busy training are they that many of the 366th's VF's are still painted in their Desert Flash color schemes.
The 366th served valiantly in the preparations to retake Eden from the Varuta before being reassigned to help recover the lost City 15. During this action, the 22nd ARS suffered heavy casualties protecting the UNS Idaho from attack and in protecting the City-15 from a meteor shower in whose path it was left. The Wing has regrouped aboard the UNS Long Beach before their next mission. The 34th BS and 22nd ARS have successfully completed on Dreamstars' YB-5 Vigilante prototype design, and are currently using the design in the defense of Brittania against the last remains of the Varuta splinter fleet.
In July of 2049, the 390th FS and 726th ACS rotated back to Earth from the Long Beach to find her defenses wrecked, and the united goverment on the verge of collapse. The terrorist group Earth First has taken over large portions of Europe and Asia in the wake of a massive Varuta attack against Earth. At present, the 726th is operating from Moon Base Luna providing EWACS support for the undermanned Spacy base. The 390th FS is operating from the Prometheus class carrier Demeter, flying CAP missions over Japan against Earth First activities. With the 391st FS returning to regroup and support the besieged UN Spacy, the 366th has a hard road ahead.
