| Samuel A. Kirk School Please see our special page dedicated to the Samuel A. Kirk School Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Members of our Club have been assisting with the "Walk for the Cure" at Busse Woods for more than 22 years. One representative from our Club attends the JDRF meetings and then seeks volunteers to help with the kick-off luncheon and the Walk. On the day of the luncheon, for teams and sponsors, we help set out the centerpieces and literature packets, then register guests as they arrive. On the day of the Walk we are in our places at the registration table early in the morning greeting the 6,000 plus people who attend to accept their pledges and money for this fundraiser. Some of us help with counting the donations from the participants and prepare the sacks for pickup by the security company. Wings "Women in Need Growing Stronger" Since 1985 WINGS has provided transitional shelter and sipportive services to women and their children so they can become self-sufficient and financially independent. In addition to the Safe House, a safe haven for women and children fleeing domestic violence, WINGS currently operates 23 homes and apartments thoughout Noth ans Northwest suburbs which provide shelter for up to 90 women and children each night. Our members contribute toiletry items, t-shirts, socks and underwear periodically throughout the year. Our Club also makes a financial contribution from $100 to $150 or we purchase a needed item on their wish list. Child Life Staff, Lutheran General Children's Hospital New stuffed animals and gently used gift bags are contributed during the year. The bags are used to present gifts to the patients and their families. Christmas Family A needy family is sponsored by our members each year and a generous supply of gifts and gift certificates is presented to the family, usually through the help of a social worker. Our members are encouraged to contribute money and/or gifts for the family members. Desires and needs of the family as well as clothing sizes are communicated to our members in the November Newsletter. Shoppers are assigned and alloted $50.00 for purchasing gifts for each family member. Our members enjoy seeing the toys, clothing, and other items before we wrap them during our December meeting. |
