I am currently working on a long-term project to model the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific as if it never existed! Okay, as if the Cincinnati Southern had not been leased to the CNO&TP which was then leased by Southern Railway and finally Norfolk Southern.
I have used basemaps of arial photos for locating trackage, signals, bridges, tunnels, rivers, roads, buildings, and mountains. Unlike using HOG or some other digital elevation mapping software, I cannot be certain of vertical elevation accuracy, however, I can be certain where a building is and isn't!
