Course Objectives:
Attendance & Participation:
Active
participation and frequent immersion in the target language are essential to
language development and therefore you must attend class. Attendance is taken
each class session. According to T-VI policy, students enrolled for credit or
audit are expected to attend all class sessions and failure to attend the first
two weeks of classes will result in the student being dropped. Your instructor may drop students with
excessive absences (15% of total class hours= 5 classes). Moreover, tardiness
or leaving class early will be noted and partial absence recorded.
Remember,
the only way to better your spoken Spanish is to speak---which probably
means that you will have to take some chances, experiment, make mistakes, and
learn! Besides active in-class participation you are expected to
conscientiously prepare assignments outside of class so that you are thoroughly
prepared for class. To participate actively, you will need to come to class
well prepared in terms of vocabulary and ideas.
Likewise, you will need to come willing to practice expressing
yourself. Oral communication does not
imply perfection, but it does necessitate an increasing ability and willingness
to convey what you want to say in Spanish.
In addition to your oral participation, your in-class performance also
includes your attitude towards your classmates, the degree to which you have
prepared the assignments, etc. Please respect and work with the other students
to establish a positive environment in which everyone will contribute as much
as possible. You will receive 3 in-class performance grades throughout
the semester. The average of these grades, combined with attendance, will
comprise 30% of the final grade for the course.
Please
put your cell phones on silent or vibration mode. If you receive a call, and it is an
emergency, please step outside of class and take your call outside.
Quizzes:
There will be a quiz at the end of each lesson beginning with Lección 1 and ending with Lección
5, for a total of five quizzes. There are no make-up quizzes; however,
instructor will drop the lowest quiz score at the end of the semester. Thus,
should a student miss a scheduled quiz due to unavoidable circumstances, the
grading consequences are minimized. Only one 'drop' is allowed. Quizzes total
20% of the final grade.
Compositions:
Students
will complete three short compositions (consisiting
of a 3 page minimum) during the semester. The instructor will provide the
topics. Students will be graded on content, organization, language use,
vocabulary, and mechanics. Each
composition is worth 5% of the final grade.
Group Presentations:
Plays
appropriate for intermediate students of Spanish have been selected and
students will be chosen to play the various roles. This is an engaging and fun activity that
will expand your vocabulary and improve your fluency in the Spanish
language. They play will be presented in
class. You will be graded on
preparation, appropriateness of presentation (how well you present the play to
the class), fluency and accuracy. This
component is worth 15% of the final evaluation.
Homework,
in-class assignments, and assigned readings:
Homework
will not only consist of handouts given in class and assignments from the text
but also assigned readings. You will be
assigned a reading from the text book.
You will prepare the reading and present it to class. You will be graded on fluency, pronunciation,
and accuracy. All combined homework is
worth 15% of the final grade.
Final exam:
The
final for the course consists of a traditional written exam, as well as a 5-10
minute individual presentation that will highlight a topic that you have been
developing throughout the semester. You will be graded on originality, content,
fluency, accuracy, and use of language.

Monday
and Wednesday Schedule
Please
note that this schedule is subject to change. Due to Holidays and Campus wide
school cancellations, sometimes this schedule has to change. It is your
responsibility to keep up to date on any changes. These changes will be
announced in class. Find a phone buddy in the class so you can be notified of
any changes.
Should CNM close during finals week, CHSS finals scheduled for that day will be rescheduled to the
first non-exam day available, at the same time and the same location as
originally scheduled. If closures occur for more than one day during finals
week, finals cancelled on subsequent days will be rescheduled for the next
available day; again at the same time and location originally scheduled. If
rescheduling of a final exam is impossible due to a lengthy closing during
finals week, final grades for students will be calculated on the work assessed
up to that point.
