ST. ANTHONY’S BREAD

The excellent expression of devotion to St. Anthony, known as St. Anthony’s Bread goes back to the 13th century. According to tradition, a girl from Padua fell into a barrel of water and was drowned. In her grief the mother called on St. Anthony for help, and promised she would donate the child’s weight in grain for the poor if she were restored to life. While the mother is still praying, the child arose as if from sleep. This miracle gave rise to the pious practice of giving alms to the poor, particularly bread or in return for favors received through St. Anthony’s intercession.

In San Antonio De Padua Parish in Cavite City, the devotion to St. Anthony’s Bread started in October 2002. During first Tuesday of the month the devotees of St. Anthony would bring bread and they would be blessed and will be used by God as instrument of healing and divine favors. A lot of devotees have experienced miracles from St. Anthony’s bread. Many of them shared the graces they received during the first Tuesday mass.

This year, the fiesta will be celebrated with devotees carrying the St. Athony’s Bread during the karakol. This will implore the intercession of their beloved St. Anthony to bless the bread as they dance the karakol. In some places they carry with them leaves that they will later cook and drink for healing. For Caviteños, St. Anthony’s bread will be God’s instrument for healing and miracles.
