Pat's Writing - The Answer

The Answer

"Very good presentation Mark," Dr. Howard said as Mark went back to his seat." "Next week it's your turn Sean," Dr. Howard said as he pointed at Sean. "Fuck that's right," Sean said as he awoke from his daze. "What was that Sean?" Dr. Howard asked. "OHH nothing." Sean said as he left the class to return to his dorm room.

"Why did I even take philosophy?" Sean asked his room mate as he walked through the door. "I have no idea. You are the first freshman to take philosophy at this school," Sean's room mate replied. "I like philosophy and all, but I doubt anyone will ever be able to find the answer to the meaning of life. The search just seems kind of useless," Sean said as he put on his pajamas. "If anyone did find it, it would be some dumb ass hole like you."

"If you wait until the last minute to find a book, do not yell at me when we don't have it," the elderly librarian said in a monotone yet stern voice. "But my report is due tomorrow," Sean pleaded. "You should have came earlier," the librarian interrupted, "Now I am a busy woman, so if you don't mind, Good day." "I'll find it myself." Sean said as he turned away. "Good luck," the librarian said as he walked away.

Sean had never been in the library before. The rows and rows of books loomed over Sean and he finally began to realize that it was basically impossible to just find a book in this place. He looked at one shelf and picked up a book. "The Reiver's," Sean said, "I remember this. I read this my junior year in high school." He thumbed few a couple pages before he realized that he was wasting precious time. He looked back at the rows and rows of books. "This is gonna be impossible," he said to himself as he began to skim the titles of the books.

After hours and hours of searching Sean almost gave up. He glanced one last time at some books. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a small old book that looked very out of place due to its small height and width. "The Answer," Sean read as he picked up the small book. As he took it out of the shelf he realized it wasn't a book at all. It was a stack of papers held together by a piece of duck tape on one corner of the pages. "Wow my papers look better than this," Sean said as he examined the tattered book. "It doesn't even have an author on it." He turned some of the pages and looked at the writing. "Just my luck," Sean said as he looked at the words, "it's not in English." He recognized a couple of the words in the book as Latin. "At least I have a start with this," he said.

***************

As weeks went by Sean had slowly began translating the book. The first sentence held his interest greatly. "This is the REAL meaning of life," it said. Sean had started spending most of his days translating the book. He would stay up hours on end reading word by word than looking up each word in Latin. He spent a week translating about 3 pages of writing and when he got to the end Sean sat quietly. "Damn," he said quietly, "I guess I don't need to do my report."

"That was a strange dream," Uno said as he awoke.
