IDIOT'S GUIDE TO FORD CD 6000
REMOVAL
STOP.
Now, before we get started, the stuff below is drawn form my
experience of removing the new style Ford CD 6000 head-unit from my
wife's Ford Focus C-Max Ghia. Unusually for me I didn't break
anything whilst attempting this operation but you do this at your own
risk. If you want no risk then book it into your Ford garage
and let them do whatever it is you want doing and then if they break
something, they pay. In any case, I do not pay for anything.
Excellent. CARRY ON.
If you see a picture you can click it to enlarge it. All
pictures are mine except the one of the head unit which I pinched from here
and cropped.
Is
this stuff the same for my head-unit?
No idea. The head unit I did this on looked
like this. If yours
is the same then probably yes. If yours is different then
probably no.
Your risk.

What do I need?
You may be able to do thgis with a knitting needle like us oldies used
to do but instead go to Halford. They apparently sell the
proper tools to do the job in a pack of two double sided prongs to pull
both sides at once. I called/visited 5 stores and none had
these in stock. One branch showed me their "Euro key" works.
Get one pack of these (it may be easier with two if you are
feeling flush).
The package looks like this and the bar code is this which contains two of these and cost something trivial like four
quid or so.
What
did I do?
After much
searching of Halford and other stores I happened across
the Kirkstall, Leeds branch and met a dead helpful guy who
came out to have a look at my head unit to make sure he sold me the
right keys. As we walked I told him the pain I'd had
so far (5th store Ihad called or visited). He brought his
master set of keys and pulled the head unit for me (no charge) in about
5 seconds flat. (WARNING - do not go to UNICAR in Leeds -
they won't sell the keys and charge a fiver to do this!!!!).
Anyway, that was the head unit out. He used the keys above
(two of them) doing one side at a time. Pulled one side out
then pulled the other out.
Step one
Draw a line omn the key about 24mm from the point like this
This shows you how far in (roughly) you need to push the key.
Step
two
Shove one key in the top left hole like
this. Note which way round the key is held. |
|
Then shove the other key in the bottom left
hole (the key goes the same way round) like this |
|
Step three
Now push the head of the key left, forcing
the top right. You can
see from the pic here that this pushed an unlocking pin to the right.
Holding both keys in this way pull the radio, it should come out about
half an inch. |
|
Step
four
Do the same for the right-hand side but with
the keys the other way up. |
|
Now what?
Well, the head-unit (HU) should be free now. According to
some articles I have read you need to consider :-
- Remove the HU and you will need the radio code
- Remove the HU whilst the ignition is on and you
will need to take the car to a Ford garage to get the car to recognise
the HU again HOWEVER I have also read that this is not correct and
leaving the car with the HU connected and the car's battery
disconnected and then reconnect the battery with the HU connected will
reset this. Not sure either way as it didn't happen to me.
Why did I bother?
I fitted an iPod connecting kit. If you want to know more
email me but in simple terms I got a kit from www.incarexpress.co.uk
which is made up of a lead which goes in the back of the head unit
which then connects to two silver boxes (that I stuffed in the hole
behind the head unit on the bottom left hand side) with a wire that
then plus into the iPod. I ran this down from the HU, past
the gear lever, out on-top of the carpet but under the gear lever
housing then under the centre console and into the void under the
hand-brake switch (ours is the Ghia with the crappy electronic parking
brake) and into the glove-box under the armrest. Again, for
more info email me.
