Eowyn Shield Maiden Costume
We are no men!
I made this costume from the pattern Simplicity 4940.  What is nice about this pattern is that it is so very close to Eowyn's Shield Maiden dress.  My mom and I made only a few modifications.  First, the yoke was designed higher in the pattern that Eowyn's.  We had to cut it down a bit, but it was not difficult.  Second, the bodice is shorter than Eowyn's.  We added length at the waist (about three inches) to make the bodice longer.  Third, the bodice does not have caps like Eowyn's does.  We have not added them yet.  I am going to be having an ROTK EE party and I will add them before that time.
(Note: Fabric suggestions: Bodice: Faux Suede; Dress: Satin Like Fabric; Yoke: Shantung)
For the back of the dress, we decided not to go with a zipper, but to make lacing.  In the real dress, Eowyn wears both a vest and a corset over it.  I'm afraid time did not allow me to make the corset.  So, we did the next best thing.  The corset is laced and so we laced the back.  I actually like it a whole lot.  I think it is really pretty.  And since the movie never shows the back of Eowyn's Shield Maiden dress, you can do whatever you want and no one knows the difference!  (Except obssessed costumers like myself!)
Eowyn can smile!!!  I was really happy with the results of this dress.  My goal was to come as close as I could to the Shield Maiden dress within an allotted amount of time.  I've gotten good complements on it and I'm a happy woman.
This is a pic from my RotK:EE party.  I modified the bodice so now it fits more snuggly and I love the results.  To see a full length pic, check out the pics from my RotK:EE party here.  (Oh!  And the hair's better, too!)
