Araven BaerwundCharacters
Maedrin Forestfriend (token
elf)
Maedrin joined the group in Schoppendorf where he
had journeyed to in order to have his human father buried. Maedrin is young
for an elf (only 47!) perhaps his age explains why he was so eager to join
up with a disreputable group such as the one he found. In any case, he
seems to be in no hurry to return to his home in the Drak Wald Forest.
Fain Goldschlager
(token dwarf)
Hailing from the Middle Mountains, the dwarf Fain
Goldschlager met the two humans Araven and Darius aboard the Timberwolf.
The three of them had an unexpected, short, but not short enough stay in
Schoppendorf. Now this normally sensible dwarf is on the run with two humans,
and of all things a damn elf. Life is so complicated.
Darius Greytorrow
A human scholar from Middenhiem, Darius is a spear
carrying "scholar" who would really appreciate it if Araven would try a
little harder to stay out of trouble.
By chance, three heroes began their journey aboard the Timberwolf upon a northern tributary of the River Reik headed for Altdorf; unfortunately for them, the Timberwolf needed to make a "quick" stop in Schoppendorf before continuing on to Altdorf. They quickly discerned that Schoppendorf (known as the "Timber Capital of the Empire") is one of the least friendly places to visit. Worse yet, it seemed that their best prospect towards employment was to be hired on as lumber jacks; however, if they could manage to obtain passage out of Schoppendorf to Altdorf, then they had a promising employment prospect: joining the Crown Prince Hergard von Tasseninck on a most perilous mission into unexplored regions of the Grey Mountains. This venture would earn them the some of 20GC per person, per day in addition to a generous bonus upon successful completion of the mission.Session One
Welcome to
Schoppendorf
A difficult time was had obtaining lodgings. They hoped to leave Schoppendorf the next day; unfortunately, the skipper of the Timberwolf turned out to be a wanted smuggler. He was arrested, his boat confiscated and their hopes of an immediate departure were dashed. Money was won, via gambling by the dashing Aravund Baerwund. This led to a deadly fight in the dark, wet streets of Schoppendorf. The heroes prevailed and showed their might in battle.
With no boats expected for sometime, the fastest way out of town would be by coach; however, a coach was not expected for at least three days. The entrepid adventures went to the Market Platz in search of employment. They were approached by a tall, rough looking gentleman who asked them to follow him if they were interested in a lot of pay for only a couple days worth of work. Having not enough money to last in Schoppendorf for three days, let alone leave, the three hapless heroes allowed themselves to be pulled by the mystical rings in their noses.
They met Alfons von Fossnachstock. Alfons asked to employ them in a simple matter of kidnapping. Not as bad as it sounded, he assured them. The kidnappee would be one Lady Elissa Holbins. Alfons claimed that she and his best friend Rudolf von der Schadenstein were in love. The problem with that was House Holbins and House Schadenstein were bitter enemies. Their families would never allow such a marriage pact to take place. To make matters worse, Elissa was betrothed to another man. In two days, she would turn 15 and her betrothal would be legally binding.
Alfons, for political reasons, could not directly get involved. He asked our heroes to kidnap Elissa and deliver her to him and Rudolf before she turned 15. He would see the two of them married, thus annulling her betrothal to the other man.
Our hapless heroes felt that the situation reeked
of set up. But the promised money would be sweet and would more than solve
their current problems.
Araven, Darius and Fain ended up sharing a common room with Maeddrin an elf (of all things!). A long talk with Ellisa's maiden brought together a half baked plan to kidnap Ellisa. The group managed to sneak Araven into Ellisa's household; unfortunately, their plan was foiled by Ellisa's lack of brain matter. The good news was they made it out of Schoppendorf a smidgen richer, and with their heads and hides.Session Two The Best Laid Plans of Dwarves and Men (and Elves)
Believing that Alfons won't rest until he has their heads on pikes (they made off with 45 GC's) they set out for Altdorf on foot. The first three days of their journey did not go well.
Day one, rain, lots of it and cold. Three out of the four came down with miserable colds (Fain, Araven and Maedrin).
Day two, a bad day for Darius. Darius awoke with a bad case of head lice. He shaved his head to get rid of the vile critters and Maedrin applied what he believed to be a helpfull plant to treat the lice bites. The plant wasn't helpful. Now Darius had a bald, red itchy head. Later that day, the group meet two travelers: the halfling herbalist Harbull Furfoot and an unemployed human laborer Werner "Pickax" Murrman ("On account of my pickax").
Day three, very early they were attacked by a creature, part lion, part bat thingy, pure chaos. Wounds were sustained, Pickax was killed and carried off by the beast.
When the session ended, Darius and Harbull were both running through the woods in fear, Araven was close on their trail, and only Fain and Maedrin were still at the camp sight staring in horror at the spot where Pickax had been. Now, only his pickax lay there amongst much gore.

Session Three
After searching for signs of their three missing companions, Fain and Maedrin managed to find their fellows. Harbull Furfoot treated the injured, the worse for wear was Darius who had to be carried upon a stretcher for the next few days. After salvaging their remaining supplies from camp and staging a short ceremony for their fallen comrade, the group allowed themselves to be led to the nearest coaching inn by Harbull.
Two hours after nightfall, the bedraggled group limped into the Coach and Horses Inn. Just prior to entering, the group was almost run down by a speeding coach. Later it was learned that a gentleman out of Middenheim had paid handsomely for that particular coach to leave immediately for Altdorf. The patrons looked strangely at Araven. He was asked if he had a brother for the gentleman from Middenheim who had just left on the coach outside looked strikingly like Araven. Darius remembered why Araven looked familiar to him. He had probably seen this same gentleman in Middenheim before; although, he did not specifically remember him.
It was too late to travel out that night, but arrangements were made for the next day. That night, Araven partook in a game of chance with the Bretonnian Phillipe Descartes. Araven caught Phillipe cheating and made off with a small, yet handsome sum of Gold Crowns. The group was largely ignored by the noblewoman Lady Isolde von Strudeldorf, but discovered that they would be sharing a coach with her and her entourage of three.
The next morning, a group of ten people showed up to ride a coach that comfortably seats six. The ten included the Lady Isolde, her body guard, her lady, Phillipe Descartes, an introspective student who never spoke and largely ignored everyone, the players plus Harbull. The coachmen were missing.
Gustav Fondleburger (the proprietor) had to raise the two coachmen Gunnar and Hultz. The coachmen finally showed, but were uselessly hung over. With the coaching of Gunnar, Fain managed to hitch the horses up to the coach. Somehow, Araven was elected to drive. Lady Isolde pitched a fit about the crowded coach. A plan to rotate people from inside the coach to the top was worked out amongst Fain, Araven, Maedrin, Harbull and Phillipe. Lady Isolde, her two companions and the quiet student refused to take turns. It was determined that those four plus Darius (too injured to be helpful anyway) would remain inside. The a fore mentioned five would take turns riding up top in groups of three.
Close to evening, the coach stumbled upon an ambush set up by a group of mutants. The coach was overturned, but the group easily dealt with the small band of mutants who had all ready been involved in combat with another coach (and suddenly the characters remembered a coach which had nearly run them down outside of the Horse and Coaches Inn).
The other coach had not faired as well as the party. Everyone aboard that coach had been slaughtered. All bodies were searched and all loot was gathered. One of the bodies could have passed as Araven's twin. Two pieces of parchment were found upon him: an inheritance letter for one Kastor Liebrung for an estate and sum of 20,000 GC in the town of Bogenhafen, and another document identifying Araven's look a like as said Kastor Liebrung. Said Herr Liebrung had a strange tattoo on his right breast of a small purple hand.
hmmm. Things were looking up.
Upon arrival in Altdorf, Araven had a strange encounter at the Konigplatz. Two men approached him. They never spoke a word, but kept looking at him and scratching their left ears. The scratching became more and more pronounced until they looked at him in a disgusted manner and stormed off. While this was going on, Maedrin noticed a tall gaunt fellow wearing all grey watching them from a doorway in the distance. The group saw the two men approach him, and the three slipped inside the building. It did not help that Darius found a poster stating that a reward was being offered for a traveling group consisting of two humans, a dwarf, a halfling and perhaps even an elf. It seems this band is wanted for theft and attempted kidnapping by one Alfons von Fossnachstock of Schoppendorf. Yippee!
It was decided that the group would make their way to Bogenhafen, where Araven would pose as Kastor Liebrung and they would split the riches. Before going to Bogenhafen, they would obtain a tattoo of a purple hand on Araven. While he and Maedrin were doing this, Fain, Harbul and Darius would obtain passage on a ship to Bogenhafen (being the fastest means). The plan to join Prince Von Tasseninck's expedition was scraped in lieu of the much more lucrative prospect of impersonating Herr Liebrung in Bogenhafen.
Things went sour for Araven and Maedrin. A search for a tattoo artist was not difficult; however, when they described the tattoo they wanted, they were given horrified looks and told to "Leave and don't come back!"
Fain, Harbul and Darius had better luck. At the docks, Darius heard his name called out and suddenly found himself being bear hugged by his older brother Josef. What luck! Josef is a boatman and the proud owner of the river barge Berebeli. He explained that he was currently bearing a cargo of wine for a merchant in Bogenhafen. Not only would he be more than happy to supply transportation, he was also in the need of deck hands and would pay the sum of 10/- per day for good, honest work.
Upon marrying up with Maedrin and Araven, it was determined that leaving Altdorf immediately would be best. Plans were made to leave the next morning, in the mean time, Josef took them to The Boatman Inn for drinking, eating.
When the adventurers left the inn, they became aware that they were being followed. The two gentlemen performing the strange scratchings towards Araven at the gate were indeed following them. The characters made several twists and turns throughout the streets of Altdorf, then lying in wait, to their horror they saw their two pursuers shot down by crossbow bolts. The assassin was briefly glimpsed and appeared to be the same strange fellow in gray robes who was seen talking to the two gentlemen at the gates.
Morning was sour. When the characters awoke, they found the bodies of the two gentlemen upon the deck of the Berebeli! Josef set out immediately. Being no stranger to "back alley dealings" he decided that the bodies would be disposed of on the Weisbruck Canal. The bodies were searched, turning up little but discovering that the two gentlemen bore the same purple hand tattoo which was found on the deceased Kastor Liebrung. Josef rigged the bodies to sink and sent them to a watery grave in the Weisbruck Canal.
The first day on the Canal, seasickness was dealt with and the characters were unnerved by a group of Roadwardens riding along the Canal and appeared to be trailing the Berebeli. They were seen throughout the day, then the view of the road was lost.
Three days of river journey brought the characters to the town of Weissbruck. After docking and making preparations for the next mornings departure, the characters noticed that they were being watched by the same gray dressed gentleman from the Konigplatz in Altdorf. Enough is enough! This mysterious fellow needed to be confronted. Attempts to follow him were made, but were not successful.
That evening, the roadwardens caught up to the party. The 12 of them were led by Araven's father! Uh-oh, Papa's pissed! His father told Araven that they were sent to capture the group and bring them to justice in Schoppendorf. Araven's father recognized his son's description. He has been trailing him and found the carnage of the coach wreck. There he discovered the body of Liebrung and noting the strong similarity to his son, convinced his captain that it was indeed his son. He followed them as far as Altdorf to discover that authorities claim that two traveling merchants from Middenheim were reported missing. He spoke with someone who spotted them earlier that day at the Konigplatz seemingly conversing with someone who matched the description of Araven/Kastor. His father strongly suggested that Araven remain "dead" and not return to either Schopendorf or Altdorf. He left claiming that to him, "my son died".
Through much bribing and investigation, the mysterious gray clad fellow was found at The Trumpet Inn. He gloomily informed Araven, "I know your game Kastor. You're a dead man Magister Impedimentae!" No other conversation could be coaxed out of him.
Early the next day, the gloomy fellow and three thugs attacked the party. Much to their surprise and happiness, the party all survived and the mysterious fellow was slain. Upon his body was found a note, addressed to one Herr Kuftsos and signed with the salutation Your most Obedient Servant and the initials Q.F..
After the attack by the mysterious Herr Kuftsos, the Berebeli set off for Bogenhafen on the River Bogen. The journey was uneventful and took four days.
Upon arriving in Bogenhafen, the characters had all ready developed a deep suspicion that the supposed Liebrung fortune was merely a hoax to capture said Herr Kastor Liebrung, the Magister Impedimentae. A fruitless search for the lawyers Lock, Stock and Barl located on Garten Weg confirmed this. None of the town citizens questioned had ever heard of the lawyers or the street Garten Weg. Inquires about the Liebrung estate were met with blank looks.
Cutting their losses and still in need of employment, the group set out the visit the Schaffenfest, the yearly festival held in Bogenhafen in honor of their local god Bogenauer. They arrived early at the first day of the festival as most of the fair was still being set up. While walking about and waiting for the fair to begin, the characters heard an interesting rumor: His excellency the Crown Prince Hergard von Tasseninck and his mercenary band were all slain early in an expedition to explore the Grey Mountains.
The festival began. The most attractive feature to
Darius was the Freak Show. He insisted upon visiting the freak show. In
the mean time, the rest of the festival was explored. Fain ended winning
a sum of 5 crowns for defeating a wrestling champion. Darius went to a
fortune teller to have his fortune read. He was told the following things,
after which she refused to take his money and asked that he leave, Immediately!:
The hour of the Freak Show arrived! The show was run and owned by one Doctor Malthusius. The highlight of the show was a three legged goblin who managed to escape. The three legged goby rushed past the characters and was seen entering the sewers through a rusted broken iron grate. Doctor Malthusius approached the characters and begged them to help him. He asked them to go with him to the Festival Court where they would make a legal binding for the characters to receive a reward for capturing alive his prize freak show display.
The characters agreed and went with the Doctor to the court. There, the magistrate - Councilor Heinz Richter, made the contract binding. Upon the retrieval of the goblin alive, Doctor Malthusius would pay the sum of 50 GC's, and the Town Hall would match the sum (dead or alive) plus put the characters up for the evening at the town's expense at the inn Journey's End, a plush and comfortable inn near the East Gate. It was agreed and the characters checked into the Inn. But the agreement bound them to enter the sewers immediately in search of the Goblin.
Two watchmen took them to the sewers, and the search for the goblin began.
A new player joined the group. Martin, an unemployed Mule-skinner who took employment as an apprentice rat catcher has joined the fray, along with his mentor, a mysterious rat catcher named Alain.
We picked up right after the encounter with the slime beasty The group (you included) met Martin and Alain. Alain found the blood trail of the 3 legged goblin. The sewers were explored with minor difficulties.
The body of Gottri Gurnisson, the dwarf Fain rescued from the stocks at the fair, was found in the effluent. Upon inspection, it was found that he had been mauled and mutilated. Worst of all, his heart had obviously been removed (without the benefits of gentle surgery). Alain told the group that this is the third body he has found in the past several weeks with it's heart removed in the same fashion.
The search for the 3 legged goblin continued. Alain did not like the direction the trail was headed in. He said that over the past several weeks he has heard strange noises and seen strange people in that section of the sewers. Being fearful of "magic and such" he has avoided that section of the sewers. It was decided to follow the trail despite his warnings.
The blood trail led to a heavy, locked door with a small barred opening(just big enough for a wiry little goblin to squeeze through). It could be seen through the opening that the door led to dimly torch lit cellar. Alain refused to go into the room.
Fain broke down the door with his ax. Inside was found the remains of the goblin, which consisted of nothing more than a pile of bones, one of which was a pelvis which obviously accommodated 3 legs. Also inside was a large pentacle painted on the floor; with silver candle holders bearing unlit black candlesticks positioned at all 5 points of the pentacle. In the center of the pentacle was painted the head of a bull with these words written underneath "Ordo Septenarious". The head was partly obscured by a stain of greenish blood. A circle of copper, about 3 inches thick and 15 ft in diameter circled the pentacle.
An iron cabinet stood against a back wall with a mysterious black stain pooling in front of it. Martin discovered a large, silk handkerchief embroidered with the monogram "F.S." in the far corner of the room. No other entrances or exits were apparent.
The group had just enough time to take all of this in before a stream of thick, foul-smelling black smoke began billowing inside the pentacle. Everyone fled besides Maedrin who was held fast by terror. Maedrin was confronted by what was obviously some sort of demon which commanded him to "Leave this place or end up like the goblin!" His terror eventually faded to the point where he could run out of there.
We ended with the group exiting the sewers and deciding to return to the inn. It was now morning, and it was agreed that they would all get some much needed sleep. It was decided that after resting, Darius, Alain and Martin would visit the magistrate to report the groups findings.
The group was lucky enough to take baths (for those who fell into the sewers) and break their fast before being given bad news by Franz the inn keep of The Journey's End. Franz informed them that they were expected to pay the sum of 2 GC's each, plus 10/- for baths before departing. It seems that the 3 legged Goblin was found dead in a warehouse shortly after their delve into the sewer. The Town Hall has refused payment claiming that since the adventures had no part in the recovery of the Goblin, then all contracts were null and void. SAY, didn't we find the bones of the goblin in that creepy room in the sewers? An attempt was made by Araven to bargain with the inn keep, but failed miserably. Franz also informed them that Magistrate Richter said that any grievances would be heard by him, but he would only hear them from all parties involved.
The money was paid, and the group set out to buy clothes for Fain whose clothing was permanently ruined by his dunk into the sewer channel proper. Martin and Araven had also fallen into the foul channel, but Martin was able to return to Alain's and obtain more clothing. Araven was fortunate enough to have the foppish clothing bought for him by the group to impersonate Herr Liebrung.
Alain and Martin met up with the adventurers outside the Journey's end. Alain gave them an ominous speech. He told them that he knows for certain that the shrine found in the sewer was in the cellar of the Steinhagger Offices. He reminded them that Gottri's body is the third body he has found murdered in such a manner. Then he told them of his past.
He used to be the Lock-Keep for the Docks, and was well on his way to becoming an Exciseman. At the time, he was good friends with Ulthar Schiffbauer (a prominent tradesman dealing in antiqiuties)and Karl Teugen. Then, about 2 years ago, Karl's brother Johannes returned from his studies in Nuln with the intent of taking over the family business. Karl of course opposed him, as did Ulthar and Alain with his limited political influence stood by his two friends.
Shortly afterwards, Karl developed a strange illness that the Physicians Guild could not diagnose. It wasn't long after that Ulthar lost all his wealth and went stark raving mad. Alain was accused of embezzlement. If it were not for Magistrate Richter, he would have been thrown in prison. Instead, Richter found him a job as chief Rat Catcher for the Town Hall. Ulthar is still in town as well. He now lives in the Pit (a far cry from his townhouse on the Adel Ring) and is known as Ulthar the Unstable. Recently, Ulthar has been telling ominous prophecies to anyone who will listen.
Alain asked them to stand-by him and help defeat whatever evil is gripping his beloved Bogenhafen. The adventures felt his story was heart warming, but at the time were more concerned with leaving Bogenhafen alive (dealing with demons does not sound like good heroic fun to them). Besides, aside from Araven, they were all close to being broke. It was decided that they would first find clothing for Fain and then they would all see Magistrate Richter.
It turns out clothing is too expensive in Bogenhafen. A simple suit of clothes were far more than Fain's purse could afford. Fain struck a deal with Alain to get serviceable clothing from him. Speaking of purses, sometime after while visiting the Mercantile section of town or on the way to the Schaffenfest his purse strings were cut. Oh the perils of wearing nice clothing!
At the festival court, Richter apologized for wasting their time and told them that the Goblin was found dead at a warehouse owned by the Steinhagger's about an hour after they went into the sewers. Richter heard their tale, or as much of it that they felt prudent to share. He seemed concerned, but not convinced. He wrote them a script to take with them to Town hall recommending that they be at least reimbursed for the cost of their stay at the Journey's End Inn. He also promised to speak with the Captain of the Watch and have Steinhagger's cellar searched. He told them to return to see him later in the afternoon, sometime before the close of Schaffenfest.
From there the group split up. It was decided that Darius and Araven would visit the Town Hall. Maedrin and Harbull would visit the Schaffenfest in search of a pedestal and mortar for Maedrin and to seek out a healer mentioned by Alain that was possibly seeking an apprentice. Alain offered to put up the group at his and Martin's place. In exchange, Fain and Martin would obtain three days worth of food.
Darius and Araven had limited success. The clerk at
the Town Hall sniffled a lot, and muchly ignored him. He went to confer
privately with Councilor Teugen. While he was gone, Araven spotted a slip
of paper on the clerk's desk which bore the same symbol at it's bottom
which they saw painted upon the floor of the cellar shrine. He quietly
pointed it out to Darius. Darius could make out the last few words:
Schaffenfest ends, at the sound of the twelfth bell, our plan will come to fruition. After 20 minutes or more the clerk returned and paid them the sum of 5 GC's. Maedrin obtained a pewter mortar and pedestal for a fair price from Elvyra Kleinestun and he and Harbull were told that ever if they make their way to Weissbruck to look her up. She may be in the need of a good apprentice. Fain and Martin had no difficulties obtaining food. On the way to Alain's, Araven scoped out several establishments that he could gamble in and possibly get the group some much needed coin.
Johannes Teugen
At Alain's hovel, Fain checked it out for defense. The group fears that some of the more prominent members of the town are involved in something sinister. They fear that their life expectancies may be drastically shortened after reporting their findings in the sewer. Several of Alain's rat traps were set at strategic points. Araven and Darius returned and told them what had happened at the Town Hall. Darius, Araven, Fain and Martin returned to the Schaffenfest.
While there they met up with Maedrin and Harbull. They bumped into Doctor Malthusius who invited them to his tent for lunch. Malthusius told them that he was given conflicting reports about his prize freak show exhibit. He tried to recover the body, but was told it had been burned and disposed of. He does not believe the story and suggested that there may be a "certain Guild in town which specializes in obtaining information". He does not know how to contact such a guild himself, but would "reward" anyone who could, "say about 20 GC's".
They returned to the festival court to report to Magistrate Richter, only to find out from his assistant Andrea that Richter had gone home unexpectantly ill. He left shortly after they departed that morning and returned a little over an hour later. Sometime after lunch, he was visited by the Captain of the Watch. Shortly after the Captain left, Richter became violently ill and went home. Also, the Town Hall had left a message for them: "Please report back to the Town Hall upon the next day".
The group debated. The majority wishes to leave Bogenhafen immediately. Darius, wishes to wait for the return of his brother. If something sinister is indeed going on and the town is to be destroyed, he can not leave knowing that his Josef could be returning to Bogenhafen any day. Alain wishes to stay and help his town. Fain is undecided. Part of him feels he should stay...then again, the demon in the sewer is a pretty convincing argument to the contrary. It was decided to wait until morning. For now, they would go to a few of the gambling houses found by Araven, and hopefully make some coin.
Not wishing to split up and divide their forces, the group made their way to a gambling establishment and went inside in groups of twos and threes. Araven gambled, Araven lost, Araven cheated, Araven won, Araven was caught cheating and told to leave and never come back under threat of violence. The plan to make coin, cost them too much of the little coin the group has left.
When they went outside, they saw that Morrslieb, the smaller of the two moons and as legend states made of solid warpstone, was almost full instead of being the crescent it should be. At one point, it seemed to wink at some of the characters!
Enough is Enough! More debate. Now those who wished to leave before, really really really want to leave NOW! Still paranoid of an attack from either Teugen or Steinhagger, Fain and Alain went ahead of the group to scout out the hovel. No trouble was found, and the night passed uneventfully.
Now, the question is: Will they stay or will they go?
