TOPIC:The Excellent Christ Rev. 1

Introduction: Revelation" as a title is derived from the meaning of the Greek title apokalupsis. This latter term is a combination of kaluptog, "to veil," and apo, "from"— hence, "to remove the veil", "reveal" or uncovering. That which is unveiled or revealed in the Apocalypse is preeminently the glorified and enthroned Christ. Revelation has been perhaps the most debated book in the Bible. An important consideration for anyone who reads the book is that it is written in a genre known as apocalyptic. Apocalyptic literature seeks to reveal divine mysteries that would otherwise remain hidden. Yet in conveying its message, it speaks in figurative rather than literal Revelation is the only New Testament example of apocalyptic writing, but examples can be found in the Old Testament at Dan. 7-12, Is. 24-27, Ezek. 37-41, and Zech. 9-12. First of all, please note that the title of this book is Revelation—singular, not plural.

Author and Setting: John, the author of Revelation identifies himself several times as John, a brother and companion of his readers (Rev. 1:4, 9; 21:2; 22:8. During the reign of the Roman emperor Domitian (A.D. 8 1—96), who was the first Roman emperor to demand that the entire empire honor him as "Lord and God," John was exiled for a time on the island of Patmos, a small rocky island in the Aegean Sea off the southwest coast of Asia Minor. It was here that he received the vision recorded in Revelation (1:9). Because of its desolate and barren nature, Patmos was used by the Romans to banish criminals. Prisoners were forced to work at hard labor in the mines and quarries of the island. John may have been warning first-century believers not to give in to the emperor’s wishes (compare 22:8-9).

Recipients: Churches of Asia Minor

The epistle is addressed to seven churches located on a major travel route connecting population centers of Asia Minor. Dwelling amid the immorality of popular religions, the squalor of slavery with its dehumanizing effects, the desperate delusion of the mystery religions, and the persecutions by the Jews and the emperor, the fledgling Christian assemblies of the seven Asian cities continually stood in jeopardy. The Revelation provides a message of comfort and a promise of the providential intervention of God in the affairs of men. Triumphant vision and the promise of the ultimate defeat of evil enabled these early Christians to encounter successfully the challenges that greeted them.
