Introduction.
Solomon meaning "peaceful" - the builder of the Temple in Jerusalem and the first prince to be king of Israel; author of Proverbs, the Song of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes

Upbringing in a polygamous atmosphere full of jealousy and strife I Kings 1:5-10, 15-21 Solomon succeeded David his father as king of Israel. His rise met with widespread approval from the people, but David’s officials were slow to accept the new king. They did warm up considerably, however, when they realized David was determined to anoint Solomon as his heir. Solomon became Israel’s king because God had told David that Saul’s heirs would not follow him to the throne.
What can we deduce from I Kgs 1:5-6?
Solomon's Character.
In many ways, Solomon’s 40-year reign as king of the Hebrew people is a puzzle. In his early years he was both noble and humble- undoubtedly one of the best rulers of his day. Unfortunately, Solomon was not strong enough to withstand the temptations that go along with a long life of luxury.
Early to mid life
: Ascension to the throne. Chosen by God I Chr 28:6-7, Ro 9:20-24 Anointed king before David died — 1Kg 1:17-39, 2:12According to the chronology in 1 Kings 11:42, Solomon was about 20 years old when he was crowned. He assumed leadership of Israel at a time of great material and spiritual prosperity. He reigned for 40 years.

What can we learn from the request of Solomon?
God not only granted Solomon’s request, but He also promised him riches and honor if he would
walk in the steps of his father, David.
Why did God appear to Solomon at the time He did?
The Lord answered his payers - 1 Kg. 3:16-28, 4:29-34, 5:12, 10:23, 2 Chr. 9:1-12,
Found favour with God. I Kg 9:1-3; IIChr 1:1
What is the significance of 9:4-9? If idolatry should be introduced, Israel would be punished and
the Temple would be destroyed
Solomon’s Temple.
One of Solomon’s first major feats was the construction of the Temple in Jerusalem. 1 Kings
3:2,6:1,11-14. What motivated Solomon to build the temple? After the Temple was completed,
Solomon planned an elaborate program of dedication. 1 Kings 8,9.
