You are
welcome to the second session on Abraham. Last week. we looked at the public life and testimony of Abraham with respect to his call, the crisis of the call and his display of contentment - which is great gain (1 Tim. 6:6-I2). It became evident during our discussions that seeking to serve God and obey his word may lead to crisis but we need not despair because " faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it" Moreover, it was highlighted that we need not run away from problems but face and resolve them with total dependence on God for direction: for "there hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it".Today. we shall he looking at his private and domestic history with God. focussing on the growlh of the soul.
Father of
Faith Genesis 15:1-6. 17:1-14, 23-27.21:1-21, 22:1-18; Romans 4:1-25: Galatians 3:5-10: Hebrews 11:6, 8-18. Consequent upon his initial call by God and his public life and testimony in Genesis chapters 11-14. God begins another chapter with Abraham 1w assuring him to be his shield and reward (Gen. 15:1).When Abraham lamented to God that he had no son. God declared that he should have a
Son and that his seed should he as the stars of the heaven for multitude. "Abraham, believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness.".(Gen. 15:6). While Abraham believed in God, he was also frank in discussing with God as to the fulfilment of his assurance. As Christians (spiritual seeds of Abraham). we need not he presumptuous hut it is profitable for us to discuss frankly with God concerning His word because he loves honest dialogue. The source of Abraham’s righteousness is not faith rather God graciously granted His righteousness to him in response to his trust and dependence on Him.Not only was faith necessarv to
receive the promise initially, but God also required that if the covenant blessings were to continue. Abraham had to make a sincere effort to please Him by an obedient life because ‘without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that deligently seek him." (Heb. 11:6). This truth is evidenced in: (a) God’s demand that Abraham walk before Him and be perfect (Gen. 17:1). (b)Gods comand on circumcision to Abraham and his descendants: He stipulated that any male not circumcised would be cut off from the people of God (Gen. 17:14) for he had broken the covenant — meaning that refusal to obey God could lead to the removal of covenant blessings. (c) God’s test of Abraham, in a specific instance, by demanding the sacrifice of Isaac (Gen. 22:1-2): he passed the test and consequently God re-affirmed his promise to continue His covenant with him.Fervency in Hospitality Genesis 18: 1-15’ Matthew
25:35: Luke 13:18-30: Hebrews 13:1-3We are
not told how Abraham knew that his midday visitors included the Lord God. Probably. the Lord Himself opened his eyes, or that was his usual practice. Observe the way he runs around like a servant to honour and welcome these strangers. A mark of Christian transfonian is stangering generosity. Salvation is not bought with money but one evidence of whether or not we have trusted Christ is how completely we trust I urn with all we own (Luke 1 8:22). Hospitalitv is a virtue. Christians are required to practise it. When you think about giving to others, think about all God has given to you.Friend of
God Genesis 18:17-33: Psalm 25:14: 1 Timothy 2:1-4; James 2:1 7-24Abraham walked
so closely with God that 1-he would not want to do anything without informing him. Abraham endeared himself to God. not unIv because of his faith and obedience but also because "he will command his children and his household after him. And they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgement; that the Lord mey bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. he was a man of prayer and he teared the LORD (Psalm 25:14).Abraham did not just rejoice that he
was privileged to know front God about the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. he took upon himself to intercede alone with God. Note that "Abraham stood yet before the Lord" while the others left; the burden in his heart would not just let him go. He pleaded his case with God in all boldness and persevered in prayer. The intercession of Abraham saved Lot (Gcn.19:29), our intercession could save people from physical. emotional, spiritual and eternal calamity’.Questions
