THE HOLY SPIRIT  - (PART 5)

Memory Verse:  “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” John 7: 38 (NIV).

Bible Passage: John 7: 33-44.

LESSON OBJECTIVE

To be able, at the end of the lesson, to see the Holy Spirit as

a). the clean water that quenches our thirst;   and b). the water of restoration.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

When we drink good water, our thirst is quenched, but can still get again thirsty after a while.

When we drink the water Jesus gives, we are never thirsty again because we have the well, or spring, flowing in us. See John 4: 13-14.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: THE PURE RIVER OF THE WATER OF LIFE

What is the nature of this water, and what is its source?

What does it do to the drinker?

i). The Holy Spirit is the inexhaustible water that flows from the rock. See Exodus 17: 1-6.

ii). The Lord Jesus Christ Himself is the Rock from which the water flows.

See I Cor. 10: 1-4; John 15: 26.

iii). This water is pure and capable of quenching our thirst. See John 14: 13, 14.

iv). The water, being a living one, is capable of giving life to anyone who drinks from it.

See John 7: 37-39.

v). The Holy Spirit is inviting you to come and drink freely.

See Rev. 22:17; Isa. 55: 1-3a; 6-7.

In contrast, what are the “poor waters” that people rush after these days?

For how long do they quench one’s thirst? Remember John 4: 13, 14.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE WATER OF RESTORATION

i). See Psalm 23:2.

What is the function of “quiet waters” to sheep that are feeding on green pastures?

It reminds us of refreshment, restoration and satisfaction to the whole of its being.

That is what the Holy Spirit does to our body, soul and spirit.

ii). See Judges 15: 9-19

What difference did the water make to Samson after he had accomplished a humanly impossible task with God’s help?

It recharged and strengthened him.

In the same way the Holy Spirit recharges our spiritual battery when we run dry or are drained of power and strength while working for the Lord.

 iii). See John 4: 15-18; 39.

Jesus had offered this woman the water of life, John 4: 13, 14. What difference did it make to her life when she believed in Jesus?

It brought about a spiritual turn-around. Her subsequent testimony showed she was now a different person, one that members of her community could even listen to after she had previously lived a far from exemplary life.

When we receive Jesus into our lives, the Holy Spirit comes and makes us new persons, vessels that He can use to produce credible testimony to God’s glory.

SUMMARY

Any other water than the Holy Spirit will never finally quench our thirst. Only the Holy Spirit in us can satisfy and keep us from thirst.
