SHINNING FOREVER IN HOLINESS  - (PART 9)

Memory Verse:  “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.” Proverbs 10:19.

Bible Passage: II Kings 5: 19-24; Psalm 64: 1-3.

LESSON OBJECTIVES

To study the danger of lying  and talkativeness, and how believers can rule over them.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

A talkative person will end up being a liar, and a liar will end up in hell fire.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: LYING FORBIDDEN

 a). What is lying?

It is outright falsehood or half-truth. Deceptive statements and all manner of flattery are all in the same family.

See Prov. 12: 22; 26: 28; 29:5.

b). Why does someone tell lies?

Because of fear of punishment, or unwillingness to accept responsibilities for one’s actions. It could also be that one is seeking an unfair advantage or gain over others.

c). What is the danger in lying?

As one’s sin will always catch up with him or her (Num. 32:23), no liar will be able to escape their reserved fate as spelt out in Prov. 19: 5; Rev. 21: 6-8; 22:15.

d). How do we deal with this problem in our lives?

i). We need to pray for the Lord to cleanse us from the sin of lying, for none of us can claim we have never sinned in this area when we consider what we defined lying to be. See Psalm 51:2.

ii). We need to go further and ask for His help in guarding our hearts and lips, knowing He wants us to be clean and spotless, and not messed up with lying lips and lives. See Psalm 141: 1-3; Eph. 5: 25-27.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: TALKATIVENESS IS SIN

a). What leads to talkativeness?

It is the product of an untamed tongue, a tongue that is out of control. It leads us into sin. See Prov. 10: 19; 13: 3.

b). How does talkativeness affect our claim to be mature Christians?

Keeping one’s tongue under control is one of the marks of a mature Christian. See James 3:2.

c). How do we deal with this problem?

i). Talkativeness is avoided by careful listening and being slow to speak/respond, James 1:19.

ii). Given the trouble that talkativeness can bring about ( see James 3: 5-12), we sure do need to ask for the Lord’s help here if we are to listen well and be slow in responding.

iii). Let us learn to take our complaints to the Lord instead of talk, talk, talk. Psalm 64: 1.

SUMMARY

A man who cannot keep his tongue under control will sin with it, and all sinners will have their end in hell fire – which is the second death. Rev.22:8.
