LESSON OBJECTIVE

The Study is designed to clarify the different roles of members of the family.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

A Christian home is an institution bound together by love where Christ is the supernatural head and as a result the father, mother and children radiate Christ daily. A Christ-centered home is the foundation for a good society and nation.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: WHAT IS THE DUTY OF THE HUSBAND/FATHER?

i). The father is the human head of the family. Eph. 5: 22-23.

His headship of the family means he is responsible to establish the family altar.

ii). He is expected to rule his family faithfully in the sight of God as Abraham did.

Gen. 18: 17-19.

iii). The husband is to love the wife to the same extent the Lord loved the Church and gave His life for her. Eph. 5: 25-30, 33.

It is his job to “polish” and “beautify” his wife (see vs. 26-28).

iv). The husband is to comfort his wife in times of sorrow, sickness or need.

See I Peter 3: 7; I Sam 1:8.

The husband is not to respond, “Leave me alone! Can’t you see to that yourself?”

LESSON OUTLINE 2: WHAT IS THE DUTY OF THE WIFE/MOTHER?

i). The wife is to submit to her husband as to the Lord, and respect him too.

Eph. 5: 22, 23, 33.

ii). She is to be an example to others in dressing, Christlikeness, good works, etc.

I Pet. 3: 1-6.

iii). The good wife is hardworking and trustworthy. Prov. 31: 10-15.

Which of the two – wife and husband – in your opinion has the tougher responsibility?

LESSON OUTLINE 3: WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF BOTH?

i). The two are responsible for raising the children, Gen. 1:28.

They should therefore love the children and bring them up in the way of the Lord (see Prov. 22: 6), teaching them to know the Lord and His word (see Deut: 32: 46; Eph. 6: 4(b)).

This is not a responsibility they are to transfer to others even if they can afford the funds. Otherwise one day it will dawn on them that they do not “know” their children any more, and can no longer influence them for good.

ii). They are to pray every day for their children, I Thess. 5: 17.

iii). They are not to exasperate the children, Eph. 6:4(a).

iv). They are to provide for the needs of their family, I Tim. 5: 8.

LESSON OUTLINE 4: WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF THE CHILDREN?

i). The children are to honour and love their parents, Exodus 20: 12.

ii). They should fear, honour, respect and serve the Lord always, whether or not their parents are there to watch them.  Gal. 6: 7; Psalm 139: 1-12; 17-18; 23-24..

What is the likely outcome when a member of the family fails in his or her own responsibilities?

SUMMARY:

A home that is bound together by the love and fear of God will abide forever.
