Early on, I spent my days in the happy-go-lucky town of Haven, but life was pretty dull. There are only so many things you can do in a reasonably peaceful city surrounded on all sides by mongbats and lizard men. Many days were spent engaged in my favorite pastime, passing out in the city's tavern. My friends even nicknamed me for the sound my head made as it hit the bar. Of course, things changed, as they often do, when a messenger huffed up to me one day with a tiny scroll in his hands.
"An invitation to Britain? But from whom?" I wondered aloud, impervious to the passers-by, milling about in the lackluster of youth. As I walked the streets, pondering the note, I happened across the Moongate in the town square. I had always avoided such things, as the arcane both fascinated and frightened me. I knew instinctively that there were things out there... terrible things. And here I was, looking at the scroll in my hands, and wondering. I drew in a deep breath, and stepped into the blue-white light.
After a brief tingling sensation, the light subsided and I found myself in a sprawling city, full of life. So many people! I followed the hasty instructions as best I could and eventually found myself at the North Side Inn, where I was to meet the people who would completely change my previously ale-filled existence... the Lost Kings.
Xiag outfitted me with a manner of attire more befitting a fragile adventurer... and I learned my first lessons about wielding a sword, the importance of wrapping wounds, and the pleasures of a simple floppy hat, even if it was pink. Further expeditions would help me to learn to hold the correct end and to block the things coming at me with the rather heavy shield now strapped to my left arm.
My fears of the occult were easily overwhelmed by Xiag's tutelage, and I too learned to weave spells, of a sort. Many were weak, and I struggled at first, but soon I too learned to strike at the abominations in the forests with great balls of fire. I ventured out as often as I could with the Lost Kings, and gained a great deal of experience with my new found friends. El Scorcho and Katar demonstrated to me the finer arts of warfare, and MajestyMichael was always available to heal me when I was down. I also learned not to fear death as Xiag helped me return to this world more than once after lying my head down in Shame.
After many adventures, a few unfortunate outings with a lute, and a much needed, snappy new outfit, our Guild Master El Scorcho proclaimed that I had earned the right to be known as the Lost Kings' first true Warlock, for I had demonstrated capability both with sword and with magic (if not always with humor). I gratiously accepted the title, and promised to help other guild members in future who wished to balance both sides of the adventure's life, as I have tried to do. I also agreed to help establish and run a small shop (between adventures, of course) just North of our house, to help outfit travelers as they pass along the road to Yew. Between this, my fencing lessons, and my trips to Moonglow to further my spellcasting, I've got a full life ahead.
I look forward to seeing you again, on the highways and byways of the Lake Superior shard.
