Making Paper Mache Nests for Finches
Start with a few sections of newspaper, egg shaped balloons, and flour and water paste in a shallow container.
Tear the newpaper in half and then into approximately 1" strips.  Dip into the flour paste and draw over the edge of the container lengthwise to scrap off the excess.  Apply to the balloon as shown in the center, leaving an opening ..
It took me one evening in front of the TV to complete the first stage of these 6 nests.
After drying overnight.  I popped out the balloons then used plastic drinking straws to create a lip at the bottom of the entrance for the birds to land on
Once the straw is fastened in place, proceed to lay strips over is and around the entire opening as shown on the right.
Let them dry overnight again then they are ready to paint, or ready to hang in the aviary/breeding cage
Above is the finished nest ready to hang by inserting a coiled wire through the hole in the top that is strong enough to hold the weiight of the nest.  Coat hanger wire is probably adequate.  I use No. 10 utility wire from the hardware section of Walmart.
