HAPPY ALTERNATIVES

If television, cars, and air conditioning are all evil, then what?!? Well it seems simple that we could watch less or no television, walk more, and turn off the air conditioner.

Let’s consider the television first. Some of the first things that pop into my head are soap operas, sports, discovery, and commercials. Referring to soap operas, wouldn’t it be nicer to either participate in a local community theatre or to watch a live performance. I personally can barely stand to watch the horrible acting skills of the second rate actors on cheap soaps. Next, let us consider sports.

Imagine all of the benefits of exercising regularly by playing a sport. We know that we are supposed to workout three times a week, why not on a sports team. If you do not think you have time, then consider the Spartans. They managed an estate, participated in government, were singers, and some of the finest warriors in Greece. The Discovery Channel and other associated learning channels, well this is a bit difficult to content. They are educational, but how much of it do we retain. I am thinking that we retain little from these programs or would probably absorb more from reading a book of similar topics. If nothing else, I would think that watching commercials throughout the good programs, would drive a normal person insane. To this I would suggest to just having a television and VCR together and taking out educational films from the library. At first this may not be the best; but if there was a demand I would think that more and more videos would be stocked in libraries.

I was having a conversation with a friend and he was telling me how he would buy junk that was advertised by "his team" or during his program, to support it. Or just because it was "nifty". This frightens me to say the least. When in a world where scarcity of resources and overfilled garbage dumps are common knowledge, I am amazed that people can be so consumptive and compulsive. I have noticed how much celebrities influence fashion and how fast people rush out to their nearest malls to buy more unnecessary clothing. All transmitted directly into our homes via television.

Alternatives to cars would be walking, biking, or mass transportation. We must imagine a city without cars to be a city without parking areas and a city without big roads. Without these things we would have more compact cities where to walk someplace would not be as exhausting as it is today. We obviously will be unable to rebuild our cities today, but over time these changes would happen naturally. With the help of mass transportation along the way, we would all be living happily in much cleaner cities full of fit people.

Finally, I say reduce the places you have air conditioned or just throw away the energy hungry machine. Without going into great detail, I will mention that there are ways of constructing homes in the earth that help keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
