Gloria Maria Fajardo was born in Havana, Cuba on Sunday 1 September 1957. At the age of two her family and she fled to Miami, because of the communism lead by Fidel Castro. Her father had to stay in Cuba for some years because he was a political prisoner. When he came free, he joined the American army, and he was sent out to the Vietnam war. Here he came in contact with the toxic agent orange which made him ill to death. Glorias mother had to work very hard to make a decent living for the family, while Gloria was going to school and working at home to take care after her father and her two years younger sister Rebecca. At the moments everything was getting too tough for her, she turned on the radio, took her guitar and played and sang along the popular songs of that time. Glorias grandmother forced Gloria to take guitar lessons and stimulated her very much. So she sang, the little angel, and brought  a lot of commotion to her mothers friends.
Gloria started studying psychology and french and would have finished both and would go to France to start more studying, if there wasnt a man called Emilio Estefan. At a wedding her mother introduced her to this Emilio guy and he asked her to sing with the band. Gloria, shy as she was, didnt feel much like it in the beginning, but her mother and Emilio talked her into this performance. So she started singing at the background of the Miami Latin Boys. A little later she was asked to join this group which, while Gloria, being a woman, was in it, couldnt be named Miami Latin Boys anymore and was called Miami Sound Machine from that time
So this band played a lot of Latin music and was rather popular in South America. Gloria and Emilio fell in love and married in 1979. Not long after they got a son called Nayib.
In 1984 they scored their first real hit, world wide, with the song called Dr. Beat. From that time they started to be really popular, having one hit after another. Gloria stopped her studying and focused on the music. But at the top of her success, there was this terrible bus accident; the tourbus crashed in a snowstorm, on its way from Pennsylvania back to Miami, causing Gloria a severe back damage. Doctors told her she wouldnt be able to walk again, but this Gloria angel didnt agree. She showed her strenght and returned on stage within a year!
In 1993 Gloria and the Miami Sound Machine returned to their roots producing a Latin album called Mi Tierra, which was a big success. The next album was one with covers of songs Gloria liked most; this was perfectly times, since Gloria was pregnant again and got her baby daughter Emily Marie, not long after.
So went on her carreer, she made a few more albums and right now Alma Caribea (Caribean Soul) is out and she is working hard on her next one, which will be in English, and is preparing her next world tour in 2001.
So keep an eye out!!!!!!
