Toastmasters International

CMU Toastmasters Club was organized by Central Michigan University staff and students and chartered by Toastmasters International in 2002 to provide a forum for people to practice leadership, public speaking skills, and interpersonal communication skills in a supportive environment.

At CMU Toastmasters, members develop important personal skills when conducting the business functions of the club, presenting prepared speeches to members, and communicating verbally and in writing with club members. Each meeting gives members an opportunity to practice:

§         leadership roles

§         impromptu speaking

§         presenting/listening to/responding to prepared speeches

§         constructive speech evaluations

§         interpersonal communication skills

Upon joining a local Toastmasters club, each member receives a manual from Toastmasters International. All members also have access to other books, audio and video cassettes on public speaking and leadership. In addition, members receive the award-winning, The Toastmaster. This monthly magazine offers the latest insights on public speaking and leadership techniques.

Toastmasters is for individuals 18 years of age and older. Our club membership reflects the wide diversity of both the university and the surrounding Mt. Pleasant community.

We look forward to having you visit one of our meetings soon!  Come over and see what we’re all about! There is no obligation attached to a visit.

Joining is easy too; we are among more than 8,000 clubs around the world and if you ever leave the area you can easily transfer your membership to a new club location convenient to your new home or office. See our Application for Membership for specifics about membership fees and dues.
