| IN THEIR OWN WORDS was developed by Ingrid Sonnichson during the summer of 1980 on a grant from the Drama Department of Northeastern University in Boston with the help of a summer intern named Faith Justice. The department wanted a show they could enter in the American College Theater Festival and felt an original script would garner more attention. In Ingrid's words: I had recently moved to Boston to teach at Northeastern (Fall, 1979) and used the summer and the research as an opportunity to get to know Boston and its' history. I had done a lof of 'immigrant' shows while living in New York and as a result knew that city and its' neighborhoods very well. Faith, my assistant, and I read or scanned over two hundred books, read old newspapers, (ads and all), spend time at the various libraries and museums that covered the material we were researching, and finally put the material together, cutting and pasting. The production was quite successful and went to the regional finals for ACTF in 1981. That year 48 other productions were in competition, six of which went to the Festival. Out of a cast of 14, six had never been on a stage before. Two went on to become professional actors and are still working in the Business - one in Los Angeles and one in Boston. |
