TAKE BACK THE NIGHT

is an international rally and march organized in local communities with the purpose of unifying women, men, and children in an awareness of violence against women, children and families. The event is a collaboration of community, campus and other interested persons who are ready to take a stand against violence and make the night safe for everyone.

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT

rallies and marches began in 1976 in Belgium, when women attending the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women walked together holding candles to protest the ways in which violence permeates the lives of women worldwide. It is a protest against the fear that women encountered walking the streets at night. The first Take Back the Night in the United States occurred in San Francisco in 1978.

Rachel Griffin Biography

Rachel Griffin has been actively involved in the movement to end violence against women for three years. While earning her Bachelors and Masters Degrees at Central Michigan University (CMU), she became involved with the nationally recognized Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates (S.A.P.A.) overseen by Steve Thompson at CMU. As an advocate, Rachel had the opportunity to present numerous educational programs addressing sexual assault and domestic violence. She has spoken in front of audiences as small as 10 up to audiences as large as 1,000. In addition to comprehensive educational programs, Rachel has also performed in No Zebras, No Excuses and Vagina Monologues. As a presenter, her ability to relate to her audience is astounding. Her warm demeanor and interpersonal nature accompanied by her young, multicultural appearance welcomes students, administrators, and staff to personally engage with these social issues on college campuses.

Rachels passion for sexual assault and domestic violence advocacy is derived from her personal experience and serving as an advocate to survivors. As a high school student, Rachel was sexually assaulted by an older student whom she trusted. After remaining in silence for five years, Rachel confided in sexual assault advocates who have supported her along the continual path of recovery. Rachel attributes her personal and academic success to those who have helped her along the way. Currently, she is working on her Doctorate in Intercultural Communication and Higher Education at the University of Denver to increase her ability to serve as a public voice. Without question, her presentation will inspire individuals to become aware of and remember the tragic nature of sexual assault and domestic violence. Having been assaulted her self, she understands the fear, pain, and denial that often accompanies discussions surrounding sexual assault. However, with compassion and courage, Rachel gives voice to these tragic issues. After hearing her story, students, administrators and staff alike will have a face to remember. Her personal story will touch the hearts and intellect of the audience members. Undoubtedly, Rachel will serve as an inspiration for awareness and change.
