Note: The four men indicated with a * were originally sent to Castle Pinkney in Charleston and were subsquently move to the Columbia Jail facility on 1 January 1862. They made their escape on 14 February and were loose for 32 days before being recaptured. They, along with other Columbia prisoners, were transferred back to Richmond sometime in mid to late April. They were parolled in mid May.
The POW indicated with ** died at Columbia of "fever" according to an article in the Indianapolis Daily Journal, 1 April 1861, p. 3.
Note 1: Most of the Army Personel were captured at the First Battle of Manassas (or Bull Run) and originally sent to Richmond by 23 July 1861. "Military Tradition" would have called for an exchange but since the US Government did not regognize the Confederate States of America, this did not happen. Richmond was unable to store all the POWs so they were dispersed thru out the CSA in late October. After another 5 months of confinement, most were paroled in May 1862, with the establishment of the Exchange Commission.
