SUCCESS AND THE SINGLE PARENT By Coleen Mitchell
You know how the Country songs go.... There you are standing there on the street with all your belongings ( which you could carry in a hefty bag ) in one hand, a child pulling on your pant leg ,$20.00 in your pocket and no education. That's how Single Parenthood begins for some people. I know the above example may be alittle extreme, but this is how many people begin the new role of single parenthood everyday. How do you succeed with all this against you from the starting line:
Get Support from Family, Friends, Your Church or a Local Women's Agency. Once you have a roof over your head.....
Contact your local Community College or Library about getting your GED or furthering your education, Don't put it off. Knowledge is the key to your Family's future ( Believe it or not, having $20.00 in your pocket versus $200.00 is the best thing to happen to you in this instance, you will qualify for alot more stuff then if you had money, including child care )
Did I say get support. Join the local Parents without partners. They can offer you social opportunities, help with child care and a sympathetic ear
Years ago working for the local Mc Donald's or Wawa was not the best career move, but now they offer tuition reimbursment and could be a bridge until your education is complete
Look into non-traditional careers. Many federal programs are offering incentives to companies and trade schools to train and hire Women
Look into Head start programs for your child, they offer full day programs with meals
This is not an easy road whether you chose it or it was forced upon you, but following these steps will afford you a good chance at success and something else no one can take away.... SELF RESPECT
