Through the eyes of a Mother

      By Coleen Mitchell

This week I wanted to pay homage to the mothers out there. With that first cry it is the mother that can see beyond the waxy coating, blue skin and misshapened head of that newborn to see the perfect gift God has given them. Mothers by nature see their children as diamonds in the rough, no matter what adversities the child may have. Like a seasoned jeweler, they are not blind to flaws their  children may have, but have a uncanny knack to see each characteristic as just one facet of a soon to be beautiful gem. A gem that merely needs some cutting and polishing to show the unique beauty from within.
With tools in hand, discipline- the cutting tool, and nuturing- the polishing cloth, each mother begins her journey into uncovering this beauty from within. Working patiently with each facet of the child, until thier full potential is uncovered. Like a jeweler who spends many hours working on a gem, many times a mother's work goes unappreiciated, but she doesn't care because this is a labor of love. There are times through this journey where frustration and self - doubt may manifest themselves within the mother, but she works through this. Spending extra time on those most difficult facets of thier child until that area shines brightly. Once her job is complete, she sets down her polishing cloth, admires the beauty of the person developed and shows the world her work.
In closing I would like to thank my mother for all her hard work. She saw my facet of stubborness as self - determination and independance, my boldness as courage, my boredom with school as intelligence, my anger as passion, my blind trust in people as a love of the world around me, and my prodding as curiosity. I was certainly a challenge. Mom I hope that I continue to shine brightly in your eyes. I will try to keep the luster in which you have worked so hard to bring forth.  Thank you for all your hard work and for seeing the gem within the rock.

            Happy Mother's Day
