Madeline Island is the largest of 22 islands that comprise the Apostle Islands. It is about 14 miles long and 3 miles wide and can be reached by ferry, airplane, boat, or snowmobile (the ferry doesn't run when Chequamegon Bay freezes over). The Ojibwe settled the area around 1490 and the French Voyageurs established a trading post on the southern tip of the island and called it La Pointe around 1659.. The town has shifted north to it's present location. Year-round residents number about 200 but up to 2000 in the summer. Big Bay State Park is located on the eastern shore of Madeline Island.

The ferry docks at Bayfield WI and during the summer season, travels back and forth to La Pointe on every half-hour. The ferry ride takes only 15 minutes and has plenty of seats on top for a spectacular view.  On the island there is a Post Office, gift shops, restaurants, hotels, and a marina.
A map of Madeline Island painted on a sign in La Pointe. The dashed line is the ferry's route, leading from Bayfield WI to La Pointe WI. South of the island is Chequamegon Bay and north of the island are more of the Apostle Islands and then open water of Lake Superior.
This is a nice shot from the ferry, looking back at Bayfield WI.
There was a nice breeze that was not being wasted by the local sailboaters. It was cool to see so many sails in the bay.
This ferry is coming to dock at La Pointe Harbor, it's engines are put in reverse as it approaches to slow it's speed as it nears the dock. We're sitting in my car, we'll take that ferry back to Bayfield, WI.
No, this isn't the old fort - this is the museum in La Pointe, which explains all the history of the area, with many artifacts of the native population and the French fur trade era.

Someone got cranky and wanted me to include the picture of Bayfield's Marina.
