This is a page from an illuminated manuscript called Prose Lancelot, which was written between 1215-1230. The letters don't even resemble the alphabet we know today. Another difference in the manuscript that we don't have today is the illustrations around and in between the text. After the words of the story were written in ink, an artist would go through each page and paint colorful designs and letters.
