JANEL
MCNEAL’S TESTIMONY
(read more)
Emporia State senior forward Janel McNeal has
been able to overcome two Achilles tendon injuries in her left and right foot
to finish her college career as one of the most resilient
student-athletes in NCAA history.
McNeal was an intra-conference transfer from Missouri-Rolla, where
she was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder for two seasons.
The last day of school her junior year, which was a red shirt year
because of her intra-conference transfer; McNeal suffered an Achilles tendon
injury to her right foot in a pick up game. That injury forced her to miss the
first nine games of the season. She came back in six months, although doctors
estimate about 12 months for that type of injury.
On Feb. 12, 2002, just 14 games into her junior season; McNeal
injured her left Achilles tendon. She graduated that December with a degree in
an Accounting, with a cumulative GPA of 3.3. She spent the 2002-2003 season
rehabbing her left Achilles tendon; while going to school has a part time
student and representing Emporia on the NCAA National Student Athlete Advisory
Committee.
McNeal’s return was a rare occurrence and what makes it so rewarding is
that she was able to finish he collegiate career injury free and on her terms.
Despite few people believing she could or should return to the hard wood and
be an contributor
