| Dr. CHOONG Mun-keat (Wei-keat) PhD Buddhist Studies (Queensland) MA Studies in Religion (Queensland) BA Buddhist Studies (Komazawa, Tokyo) (Last updated: April 2009) ABOUT THE AUTHOR: CHOONG Mun-keat (Wei-keat) was born on 1st November 1960 in Seremban (capital of Negeri Sembilan), Malaysia. He studied Chinese and Pali Buddhism in Malaysia, Taiwan and Sri Lanka, before obtaining his Bachelor of Arts (1990) in the Department of Buddhist Studies at Komazawa University (Tokyo), and his Master of Arts in Studies in Religion (1994) and PhD (1999) in the area of Buddhist Studies in the Department of Studies in Religion (now within the School of History, Philosophy, Religion, and Classics) at University of Queensland. His research interests lie in comparative studies of the Pali and Chinese versions of the early Buddhist canon (including fragmentary Sanskrit texts). He is also interested in contemporary Buddhism in the West and Asian societies. His publications include: The Notion of Emptiness in Early Buddhism (1995; second revised edition, Motilal Banarsidass, Delhi, 1999) and The Fundamental Teachings of Early Buddhism: A comparative study based on the Sutra-anga portion of the Pali Samyutta-nikaya and the Chinese Samyukta-agama (= Beitrage zur Indologie Band 32) (Harrassowitz Verlag, Wiesbaden, 2000). He taught Buddhism courses at University of Queensland (2001-2). Currently he is a lecturer (2003-) in the School of Humanities, at University of New England, Australia.
