The Cell

The primary unit in ATM transfer is the cell. The cell in ATM is the equivalent to the packet datagram in IP. All ATM cells are 53 bytes in length. The first 5 bytes contain header information. The remaining 48 bytes are the "payload", or the data being transferred. The basic layout of a cell is shown in the figure below:
