The Horatio/Speed pairing was the non-canonical ship of choice. For a very young fandom with an ensemble cast, H/S actually was the pairing of choice for a lot of folks who wrote in it. I noticed a lot of writers were quite young too. (Rather than in some old-school fandoms where mention is made of the writer having simply stopped writing because they -- er -- expired!)
IN the CSI:M gen/slash fan universe, Speed became the firm fan favourite, and carried the whole show...and by September 2004 he will have left us. I've decided that when actors get sick of their parts, the slashiness comes out: as one review webpage says, "Speed is driven to stubble haven because he is obviously nursing a crush on both Horatio and Delko, and Delko is one confused twit who jumps from girlfriend to girlfriend, unaware that his true love is carrying a camera and staring forlornly after him." I still have no idea why I wrote in this fandom - Speed the grumpy lab-tech made police CSI was the only character I could halfway stand. (Oh, and Alexx the autopsy lady too.)
Still, the character of Caine was perfectly creepy and obsessive enough to harbour dark, cruel perversions. Speed, with "those sad, sad beautiful eyes God gave him" provided the innocent character counterpoint, and so a story was born.
