| Gammon en passant is played as in normal backgammon with the addition of the following provision:- Points made by just 2 of a player's men may be "stepped upon" by the opponent's men in passing through, ( viz the term en passant ). One of the player's men is rendered as borne off and is immediately removed from the board. The other single man becomes a single blot as a consequence. It is necessary that this "stepping over" move does not result in the opponent's man actually coming to rest there as this would result in a point occupied by men of opposing sides and is not allowed. The final resting point for the opponent's man can be either an empty point, a point occupied already by some of the opponent's own men or may hit the player's single blot as in normal backgammon. The spirit of the provision extends to give some allowance in the order of play of the men within a roll and in particular, "coming in with doubles and more than one man on the bar". The principle is best illustrated by example:- Suppose white has a closed homeboard (and other men around the board). and that the 3-point and 6-point points are 2-men points. Suppose that black has two men on the bar and rolls 3-3. The following sequence of moves is permitted as the resulting position is valid. (In fact the play is forced). move 1: 1st man enters the board on white's 3 point (en passant) move 2: Same man moves to touch white's 6 point en passant move 3: Same man moves to outside white's homeboard, perhaps hitting one of white's "loose men" move 4: 2nd man (on bar) enters board on white's 3-point hitting the single blot created by the first man. White now has one (or two) (more) men on the bar and has borne off two men by white's move. Gammon en passant with Nackgammon Setup (optional) Gammon en passant has more of a focus on the strategic back game. This focus can be further heightened by setting up the board as in Nackgammon (where a man is taken from each of the 5-points of the initial setup and made into a point in the opponent's homeboard 2-point next to the back -most men). |
