Anticipatory
Set (List specific statements or activities you will use to focus students on
the lesson for the day.): (15 - 20 mins.) Will begin class by showing a
portion of the video, All Aboard, by Readers Digest. This portion of the
video gives a good explanation about the use of manifest destiny by the U.S.
government, businessmen, etc. to promote expansion westward.
Input
(What information is essential for the student to know before beginning and how
will this skill be communicated to students?): (15 - 20 mins.) Lecture on
the concept of manifest destiny, the persons involved, what it was about, and
why it was argued pro and con during its use to expand westward. There will
also be discussion about its use today.
Model (If
you will be demonstrating the skill or competence, how will this be done?): Distribute
handout, a graphic organizer that will be useful throughout unit.
Check for
Understanding (Identify strategies to be used to determine if students have
learned the objectives.): (15 mins.) Have students break up into groups. Each
group will be designated as to whether they are for or against manifest
destiny. Each group will have to create an argument to that end and be able to
defend it. During this time a vocabulary list will be handed out.
Guided
Practice (List activities which will be used to guide student practice and
provide a time frame for completing this practice.): (15 mins - end of class
period). Continuing in groups, students will discuss their group’s position and
present it to the class. They will also need to work together on their
vocabulary worksheet.
Independent
Practice (List homework/seatwork assignment to be given to students to ensure
they have mastered the skill without teacher guidance.): Students will be
assigned to write a paragraph (containing at least 50 words) that answers the
question:
Does manifest destiny continue today? If you think so, then explain providing at least one example. If you don’t think so then explain why.
