Occurrence - LY has not yet been detected in Nicaragua; nevertheless its arrival there would precipitate the loss of more than 300,000 coconut palms and would directly affect the food security of the Indigenous, Creole and Garifuna communities. Its effect on the coastal landscapes and the ecology of the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua would be devastating.

Research projects
Rehabilitation/replanting programmes - between May and October of 2001, the Prevention Program on Lethal Yellowing disease has established more than 20,000 coconut plants tolerant to LY in the following communities: Rio Coco; Wawabar; Haulover; Tuapi; Krukira; Pahra; Boom Sirpi; Layasiksa; Rosita; Bonanza; Siuna; and others.
Economic importance/threat - More than 2,000 families on Nicaragua's Atlantic coast are benefiting from this program, which is trying to stop the disease from entering the country.
