Contacts and sources of information - CICY, INIFAP, SAGAR
Occurrence - First observed in the
Cozumel-Cancun area of Quintana Roo state in 1977 (McCoy et al,
1982).
Spread - Amarillamiento letal spread westwards
to El Cuyo in Yucatan by 1985 and southwards to Puerto Herrero (QR)
by 1989 (Carrillo & Piña, 1990). In 1990 it appeared in
the north of the state of Campeche and reached the south of that
state in less than a year (Robert et al, 1991). Phytoplasma
was identified in 1992-93 (Martínez-Soriano et al,
1994). By 1993 disease had reached and crossed the southern border of
Quintana Roo (Escamilla et al, 1994) and reached the Campeche-Tabasco
border (Escamilla et al, 1995). In 1995 outbreaks were
detected at Frontera in Tabasco (Oropeza & Zizumbo, 1997).
Reports of a jump spread to Oaxaca (Pacific coast) in 1996 were
premature because the palms did not show typical LY
symptoms.
Currently active areas - On the Caribbean
cost, since late 1999, the disease has become activity in the
southeast of Veracruz, around Coatzacoalcos. The disease is active in
Cunduacan in Tabasco and at Sisal in Yucatan. On the Pacific coast,
phytoplasma related yellowing of coconut palms in Oaxaca did not show
not show typical LY symptoms in 1999 but recently, reliable
observations of LY-like symptoms were made around Atoyac, west of
Acapulco in the state of Guerrero. The Pacific coast tall is known to
show resistance to LY when tested in Yucatan (Zizumbo et al,
1999). The Pacific coast reports still have to be confirmed and their
significance assessed.
