We’ve learned a lot this past year
But the lessons I’ll always remember will go unsaid
A cornea is your eye, Brutus an honorable man
Don’t put staples in electrical sockets
And there’s a fine line between honors and special ed
They say that curiosity can kill the cat
Like when you discover electricity at the age of 2
But the curiosity doesn’t stop there
Our friend John is lucky to be living proof
I’ve never known anyone to put a staple in an electrical socket
“Just to see what would happen”
Then again I didn’t know what I’d be subjected to
When I signed up at orientation
It’s not in the brochure
It’s what the authorities never said
There truly is a fine thin line
Between honors and special ed
One of the most subtly funny people I’ve ever met
(Proving the afro isn’t all that makes the man)
His bizarre humor is probably why I can say
Frankly Scarlet, I’m Jacob’s number one fan
And then we have quick guns Crowley
The fastest glare in the west
She gave up shooting for painting and Latin
And ruining the curve on all of our tests
Maybe it’s a sign of cheerful genius
Or bright and quirky flare
But between Lauren, Jenna, and Whitney
This class has an abundance of curly hair
And then we have Erin and Brittany
Though they act really nice and serene
You know behind their quiet smiles they’re thinking:
“What fools these mortals be.”
So far you see how quirky they are
And we still have many to mention
Let me warn you, it only gets weirder
For I have yet to talk of Patrick Barden
I’ve never met anyone brave enough to say to a teacher:
“Don’t you back sass me!”
Then again I hadn’t met someone funny enough
To make the command sound like ancient philosophy
I think this class is the place of the subtle
What with both Tom Russell and Dan
We’ve got Tom’s random bizarre but true facts
And Dan’s facial expressions that I don’t think were planned
And then we have our lovely Michael Kirchman
And though every sub will get it wrong
We choose you, Mikachu
And would have no other Pokemon
There’s only one person I know that can truly make fun of me
And make me laugh instead of making me bitter
But Jason, I think it is my turn to mock
For the thin line isn’t getting any thicker
And I cannot tell you how amusing it is
To watch Wes and Nick during class
Don’t worry Jenna, I’m not checking Wes out
Just watching the amusing facial expressions get passed
I don’t think I’ve every met someone
Who could say they do not like Nancy or Katie
They support me even when no one else laughs
And offer their own unique insanity
And I’ve never had a teacher
That sees everything even when not in the room
To tell you the truth it’s kind of creepy Mrs. Beckham
But then again, backwards cursive is too
And Beth, whatever happens
Whatever the plan
Give our regards to Broadway
And remember that Caesar was a sexy man
Then we’ve got our fabulous Vogel
And I just can’t help to address the fact
That Matt broke his leg in Hilton Head
And willingly got a bright pink cast
So we’ve had our share of tragedies
John’s electrocution and Matt’s broken bones
But despite the danger this is still the class
In which I am not constantly wanting to go home
They say we’re smart
They call us gifted
I say we’re crazy
And should be committed
And though I may forget a novel’s symbolism
The punctuation, MLA, and vocab
What I’ll recall is all I will need
To remember that high school wasn’t that bad
So maybe it’s why I love them so
And is probably the reason this poem got wrote
Though at orientation this poem will never be read
I’ll remember everyone here
For we erased the line between honors and special ed
