Another QAF Fan Here

My vcr and tv decided to conk out yesterday while watching the 16th episode of QAF season one. Their way of saying "get a life". Updating a website is hardly getting a life, but it sure beats going to bazaars and shopping for fake LV wallets to give for Christmas. Why is Christmas so fucking early anyway?
I've been surfing for two days for a review of QAF that went beyond the sensationalism, nudity, sex, homophobia, and drugs. I've read only about two. That is sad because the series mines a lot of gay issues that ought to be talked about. Instead, everything seems to be lost in the hysteria of anal sex on t.v.

I think most of the gay audience would relate well to Michael Novotny, the series' 29-year old everyday gay. He's a combination of all the three other characters Bryan, Ted, and Emett as Carrie is to Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha. He's got Emett's vibrancy, Ted's insecurity, and Bryan's appeal. But more than that, he's got something which practically every gay has had to grapple with: unrequited love for his bestfriend.

This central theme is emphasized in the first episode when Bryan visits the newborn he fathered through artificial insemination to a lesbian couple. Brooding with issues which are yet unknown to audiences at that time, Bryan perches on the building's ledge and wondered how easy it is to end everything at that moment with just a single step. His bestfriend Michael sees him and dissuades him by holding his hand.

What happened is one of the most powerful images I've seen on tv. Bryan pulls Michael up so both of them are now on the ledge. Michael goes in front of Bryan, and the latter embraces him from behind. It's a long way down ahead of them. And then the camera pulls away from them. The scene is very powerful because you would always go back to it everytime the Michael-Bryan relationship is explored in future episodes. It pretty much sums up this special relationship in a few seconds.

And that's the moment when I became a fan. It's not like your usual series where you have to sit through several episodes first before you start prioritizing the show over your boyfriend. This one will blow you away from the start. Sure, the sex scenes
Disney-fies Sex and the City, but hopefully, at the end of each episode, you will have experienced something deeper than just a boner.
