Nothin bothers me more than hearin a person being labelled. I'm so sick of people proclaimin themselves as a specific somethin. Whatever happened to goin by the name you were given by your parents at birth? I highly doubt your parents named you 'punk kid' or 'prep boy' and what not.
Labelling and stereotyping start from the day a child sets foot into their kindergarden classroom. Remember the girl with the pigtails and the glasses? Let me guess what her nickname was that most likely followed her until she was out of high school...was it nerd girl perhaps? Maybe that wasn't her exact name, but i'm willing to bet she was considered the 'smart kid' or 'teacher's pet' and what not, simply because she had poor eyesight and needed glasses. I bet no one ever took the time to watch her cry as she sat alone at lunch, or look at the ever growing scars consuming her arms. Of course no one did, why take the chance at looking unpopular right?
Its sad that kids as little as five years old already begin to categorize people based on the way they look. It gets worse as the years go by though. Ah yes, who could forget the beloved high school years? I swear i'm going to go out of my mind from all the judging that goes on in my school. I'm tired of people labelling themselves and others based on their clothes and music.
I have friends who have given up everything they stood for all those years all in the name of becoming more 'punk'. Not that it's bad to be that way, its just that people build up in their minds that they are to be a specific way, and they throw out all reasoning to do just that. I see people run around preaching anarchy , and making fun of 'the trendies' just to make themselves a supposed 'non conformist'.
I don't mean to offend anyone, i just speak the truth. I know because i've been there, and i've watched almost every one of my friends do those exact things everyday. They completely change who they are to be accepted among the 'so called freaks'. People think by pileing on the black makeup , slapping on an anarchy patch, and giving themselves a mohawk that they are supposedly a true [place label here].
I mean, people should do what makes them happy and what they feel being comfortable being in. But when they throw everything away they were ,  and judge others who aren't like them...its going too far. I have friends who would be labelled as as punk/goth, and none of them would consider dating a person who is labelled as 'prep'. Why?! I don't know, i guess they think it will make them look like less of an outcast. Why take the time to get to know the person if it will make you look like a sellout right?
Its not just the non conformists who do this though, of course not. The people who are labelled as 'trendy' do this too. Most 'preppies' wouldn't dare go near a person with a black and white makeup on, or a mohawk for that matter. I mean afterall, what if they sacrifice animals or worship the devil or something?!
I'm just so sick of all the stereotypes and judgements. Just stop doing it people!! Be yourself, go by your name you were given at birth, not a label. Even if you do want to dress in a certain style category...don't change who you are. Look pass the outer surface of your peers, get to know them. If their personality is something you don't like, well then, by all means stay away from them. But don't just assume that because they dress a certain way, they will be something you don't like.
