April brought showers and joy for the Northwestern women's water polo team. In two consecutive weeks, the women placed third place against international and national elite club teams. Big Ten Championships At the Big Ten Championship Tournament, April 18-20, at the University of Minnesota, Northwestern placed third place among the field of seven competing teams. In the third-place game, Northwestern defeated the home team Minnesota, 8-7. Northwestern had lost in the semi-finals to Purdue. To get to the semi-finals, Northwestern beat Illinois once again during the season, this time 6-4. Northwestern also lost to Michigan State in pool play. Michigan State defeated Purdue in the championship game. The top two teams from the conference play in the national collegiate club championships, which unfortunately leaves the puggy Northwestern squad out. Order of finish: The University of Michigan and Indiana University have women's NCAA teams, so they do not compete in the club championships. Ohio State did not compete. Penn State is not in the Big Ten water polo conference. Against international and national competition, Northwestern held its own, placing third among four teams. Northwestern lost to powerhouses New York Athletic Club and Navy Aquatics. In the first game against Toronto, the two teams tied 2-2, but Northwestern won in the third-place game, 10-3. The Wacker Cup, April 26-27, was played at Northwestern University. Four teams competed for the women's team, eight teams for the men's.
