November is upon us and still the letters continue about the Regents Math A exam last June. Give it up already, people. This was not some horrible plot to keep seniors from graduating. The Math A exam is the final exam for the high school freshman math course. That's right, the seniors should have passed that exam three years ago. They were supposed to have passed the June 2000 version of the exam or one of the other versions offered every June, August and January since. Some of these kids had taken the exam 10 times and not passed.

My own children have Regents diplomas with honors, the most recent awarded this past June.  I have a Regents diploma with honors, as do my siblings and my mother and her siblings.  Somehow our family has been passing Regents exams for over 60 years with an average grade of 90 or above.  Yes, my children and I went to private schools, but my moms generation went to Riverside, McKinley, South Park and Buffalo Tech.
So, explain to me please, exactly what is new about these standards?

Dear Joan,

Hi.  My name is Joan Goehrig and I am an upper class elitist.  New York State tells me that I am very smart, by giving me a Regents High School diploma with Honors, but the construct of my argument proves otherwise.  First off, I down play the role private school played in my remarkable high school success, ignoring that tests like these tend to measure socio-economic status better than how much one learns in a year, ability, or intelligence.  Secondly, to overcome the fact that I went to private school, I compare current high school students with my mother who graduated high school 60 years ago, failing to acknowledge regents exams have changed several times since then.
