WHAT TO LOOK FOR FROM A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER
MEMBER BREEDERS
HOW MANY LITTERS HAS THE BREEDER WHELPED THIS YEAR.   ( Check carefully if over 3.  Raising puppies take a lot of time and work.  Some Breeders have the time, help and facilities to properly care for many litters.  some do not)
Are the Dam and her puppies clean, with clear eyes and healthy looking coats.  Are the puppies happy and well socialized
Are the Dam and Sire on the premise and available to see.  (The sire will not always be available.  Many Breeders use an outstanding Stud owned by someone else.)  The Dam should always be available.
Were the Sire and Dam health tested for genetic problems  prior to breeding?  Bassets can carry genetic bleeding disorders and some may develop Glaucoma.   Check the Basset Hound Club of America's web site for suggested testing.
Is the Breeder in Good Standing with the AKC? If not, RUN.    Does the Breeder belong to a Local Breed Club?   The National Club?
The Breeder should sell PETS with AKC LIMITED Registration and a   Spay/Neuter Contract.
The Breeder should offer information and mentoring support for the life of the dog.  The Breeder should be willing to take the dog back at any time.
The Breeder should support their Breed Rescue.  The Breeder should participate in some form of AKC competion/training be it Conformation, Field, Tracking,  Agility or Obedience.
Puppies should NEVER be sold before 8 weeks of age and ideally be kept with Mom &  siblings until 10 weeks.   The lessons puppies learn between 8 and 10 weeks help make them well adjusted adult dogs.
Puppies should be sold with a Vet's Health Certificate and at a minimum have had their 1st set of shots and 2 wormings.
Some Breeders advertise Champion Bloodlines. If they do, the Champions should be in the 1st 3 generations.  Champions past the 3rd generation are genetically useless.  Ask to see the Pedigree.
Most responsible Breeders focus their efforts on 1 or 2 breeds of dogs.   If the Breeder you are looking at has puppies available from multiple breeds or multiple litters at the same time you may be dealing with a Broker or a Commercial Breeder.  If this is the case be especially wary  regarding the health of the parents and the puppy.
