11. The Cure - Just like Heaven

track 8 on 'Kiss me kiss me kiss me'

"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it and I promise you
I promise that I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"

Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you
That I'm in love with you"

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream...

Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone
Alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me

You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven.

What can I say? Would favourite-song-in-the-whole-world-ever cover it? I'm not sure it would express its aching beauty. If i had to pick one Cure song to listen to for the rest of my life and only one I... well I would be really pissed off, but I would pick this one. It's a masterpiece. It makes me shiver.

12. Dido - Here with me

The Roswell Theme

I didn't hear you leave,
I wonder how am I still here
I don't want to move a thing,
It might change my memory

Oh I am what I am,
I'll do what I want, but I can't hide
I won't go, I won't sleep,
I can't breathe, until you're resting here with me
I won't leave, I can't hide,
I cannot be, until you're resting here with me

I don't want to call my friends,
They might wake me from this dream
And I can't leave this bed,
Risk forgetting all that's been

Oh I am what I am,
I'll do what I want, but I can't hide
I won't go, I won't sleep,
I can't breathe, until you're resting here with me
I won't leave, I can't hide,
I cannot be, until you're resting here with me

I'm not a big Dido fan but this song is just beautiful. I didn't even want to like it but I couldn't help myself, that's how lovely it is. I have to admit as much as all the hype re Dido annoys me she does have a very pretty voice. This is definitely worth downloading even if you're not really a fan of her stuff generally.

13. James - She's a star

track 4 on 'Whiplash'

whenever she's feeling empty
whenever she's feeling insecure
whenever her face is frozen
unable to fake it anymore

her shadow is always with her
her shadow will always keep her small
so frighten that he wont lover her
she builds up a wall

oh no, she knows where to hide in the dark
oh no, she's nowhere to hide in the dark

She's a star

she's been in disguise forever
she's tried to disguise her stellar views
much brighter than all this static
now she's coming through

oh no, she knows where to hide in the dark
oh no, she's nowhere to hide in the dark

She's a star

Don't tell her to turn down,
Put on your shades if you can't see,
Don't tell her to turn down,
Turn up the flame.

She's a star

it's a long road
it's a great cause
it's a long road
its a good call
you got it,
you got it,

She's a star

This is a marvellous song - James have written a lot of great ones, but this is my favourite. It's energetic, passionate, and lyrically delicious. How do you like that 'She knows where to hide in the dark - she's nowhere to hide in the dark - she's a star' bit. Genius. I'm grinning gleefully as I type this.

14. Tori Amos - Merman
No Boundaries: A Benefit for Kosovar Refugees

go to bed
the priests are dead
now no one can call you back
go to bed
the priests are dead
finally you're on peppermint
at last

he's a merman
he doesn't need your voice
he's a merman

go to bed
dream instead
and you will find him
he's a merman to the knee
doesn't need something you're not willing to give
he's a merman
doesn't need your voice to cross his lands of ice

go to bed
priests are dead
now no one can call you back
go to bed
the priests are dead
finally you found out

who could ever say you're not simply wonderful
who could ever harm you
sleep now
you're my little girl

go to bed
priests are dead
and come sing it all again

go to bed
past the apple orchard
and you'll feel nice
two can play i said
two can play

This is one of my very favourite Tori Amos numbers - it stays with me even in my Tori-downtime periods (most of her songs tend to bug me after a while.) It's very pretty and sweet.

15. Belle and Sebastian - Seeing other people

track 2 on 'If you're feeling sinister...'

We lay on the bed there
Kissing just for practice
Could we please be objective?
Cause the other boys are queuing up behind us
A hand over my mouth
A hand over the window
Well, if I remain passive and you just want to cuddle
Then we should be ok, and we won't get into trouble
Cause we're seeing other people
At least that's what we say we are doing

How are you feeling?
I don't think you can be dealing
With the situation very well
You take a lover for a dirty weekend, that's ok
But when it's over
You are looking at the working week in the eyes of a gigolo

You're kissing your elbow
You're kissing your reflection
And you can't understand why all the other boys are going for the
New, tall, elegant rich kids
I'll admit it is a bitch, kid
But if they don't see the quality then it is apparent that
You're going to have to change
Or you're going to have to go with girls
You might be better off
At least they know what they're doing

We lay on the bed there
Kissing just for practice
Could we please be objective?
Cause the other boys are queuing up behind us
A hand over my mouth
A hand over the window
Well, if I remain passive and you just want to cuddle
Then we should be ok, and we won't get into trouble
Cause we're seeing other people
At least that's what we say we are doing

It's witty but not trite. Complex melody, nice use of pianos, quirky and clever lyrics. It's not my all-time favourite Belle and Sebastian song, but... well actually I don't have a favourite Belle and Sebastian song because they're just about all excellent. There're a couple I don't like - notably 'I know where the summer goes' and 'Electronic Renaissance'. Not my style, man.
