Official Club 507 Rules

Stuff You’ll Need

-First of all you need a Table. The table top should be around 4 feet wide (can be slimmer, but you will need the extra space for some variations of the game) and around 8 feet long and stand about 3 feet off the ground. You can make your own with a piece of plywood and a couple of saw horses. The advantage of this is that you can take it apart, which can prove very practical especially in small college-dorm spaces. If not get yourself one of those long tables with metal fold-in legs.

-Next you will need 22 12oz or 16 oz plastic cups (large SOLO brand cups are preferred), 20 for game play and 2 for rinsing. We recommend getting at least an extra pack of cups, in case one breaks or other catastrophes occur.

-2 ping-pong balls. Again, have more just in case, they have a tendency to get lost and broken.

Objective

To eliminate all of your opponents cups by throwing a ping-pong ball into each cup.

Vocab.

-Table: Pretty self-explanatory. (Still don’t know? See Above)

-Cups: Same here. (See Above)

-Live Cup: A cup that has not yet been hit, and is still eligible to be hit (in other words it still has beer inside).

-Dead Cup: A cup that has been hit, or knocked over.

-Rack: To arrange the 10 cups into standard triangle formation (4-3-2-1, starting from the back edge of the table). ALL cups MUST be touching all adjacent cups, there should be absolutely NO overlap or gaps between cups. [Re-rack: To put cups back in original position]

-Balls: See Above.

-Live Ball: A ball that is still eligible to be thrown by a player, or has been sunk in a live cup.

-Dead Ball: A ball that has already been thrown and did not succeed in sinking in a live cup.

-Consolidation: The act of re-racking the remaining live cups into a pyramid of 6, a diamond of 4 and a line of 2 (one in front of the other) when you have only 6, 4 or 2 live cups remaining on your side of the table respectfully. When there are 6 cups left the cups a re-arranged so that they are in a triangle formation (3-2-1, starting from the back edge).  At 4 cups one must consolidate the cups so that they form a diamond shape (1-2-1). When there are only 2 live cups left they must be placed one in front of the other, lengthwise. ALL cups MUST be touching all adjacent cups, there should be absolutely NO overlap or gaps between cups at all times. Consolidation is initiated by the current shooting team by informing their opponents to consolidate. The act of consolidation should not happen until the other team makes the request. A team may not be paying attention and forget to tell their opponents to consolidate. This lapse of awareness does not forfeit there right to consolidate, it just delays the consolidation process until they become aware of the situation.

-Rebuttals: After a team has successfully hit all of their opponent’s cups, the opposing team gets both of the balls back and has the chance to shoot till they miss.

The Game

---Preparing

-Matches can be played in singles or in doubles. In either case opposing teams stand on opposite side of the table.  The most common match consists of two teams of two people that stand on either end of the table.

-After the teams are chosen (Note: A team can not change players or have substitutes), and both teams agree on their side of the table, they must set it up for game play. Both teams set up 10 12-16oz. cups on their ends of the table in a pyramidal formation. Once this has been done each team fills about 1/4 of their cups with beer (or other beverage of choice, although it wouldn’t be the same thing with anything else, sometime you have no choice).

-Once all the cups are filled and both teams are content with the racking and positioning of the cups the game begins.

--Starting A Match

-In order to begin the match both teams shoot for first. A starting team will shoot both balls (in most cases the House shoots first, or the defending champions), and then the second team will shoot. The team that sunk the most cups (the maximum obviously being 2) gets to start the game. If both teams make both shots, the cycle begins again, this time with the second team shooting first. The cups that are hit in this initiation are still considered Live Cups and should not be drunken.

-Once the starting team is declared the game can officially begin.

-The starting team gets both balls back and can now shoot freely.

-Game Play

--The Throw

-The throw must be taken behind the back edge of the table. Players can not, and must not, shoot straggling the corners or leaning into the table. Any type of leaning, even without touching the table is not permitted. Any violation of this will make any points made in the shot, void. A player may not throw a ball in a manner whose purpose is to intentionally knock over an opponent's cup.

--Points and Situations

-In order for the throw to be counted as a valid point the player must sink the ball into one of the opponents cups, without touching any other objects or people. If the ball bounces on the table, or anything else, and goes in the point is annulled and the cup remains Live.

[There is a slight variation to this rule: The ball can be bounced in, but the opposing team can swap it out of the way of their cups before entry. If this rule is to be implemented, it must be declared at the start of the game before the first shot is made.]

--*If the ball does not go directly in, but it bounces off the rim of a cup and enters another, the point is valid and the cup is considered Dead.

--*If the ball circles around the rim and enters, the point is valid, and the cup is Dead. If the ball circles around the rim and exits the cup, it is considered Live. [Note: If there is to be blowing allowed in the game it must be declared at the start of the game, before the first shot is made. Blowing in order to force the ball’s entry is weak, and is sometimes only permitted for girls. Its your call, we usually don’t allow it]

-If the player fails to sink the ball, the ball is automatically under the possession of the opposing team.

-If a ball is sunk a player from the opposing team must drink the cup immediately.

NOTE: Any one player can not drink both cups, each member of the team must take one. NO substitute drinkers allowed, unless they are appointed, and allowed at the beginning of the game (before the first shot of the game), this exception is used only for outstanding circumstances, and is allowed only with the consent of All the players participating in the match.

* The players from the opposing team MUST leave the sunken ball in the cup in all instances until the second ball has been shot.*

-If both balls are sunk, then the team gets both balls back, and can shoot again.

-If only one is sunk, or none, then the opposing team gets both balls.

-If BOTH balls are made into the same cup, the balls are returned to the team and the hit-on team has to drink the Dead cup, as well as another one that the shooting team chooses.

-Once the opposing team has possession of both balls they can start shooting.

*If in fact a cup is hit, a player from the hit team must first finish the contents of the hit cup before he or she can be allowed to shoot. Until he or she does this they are considered ‘out of play’*

-Knocking Over a Cup: If the knocked-over cup has deliberately knocked over with a shot, the cup must be refilled, and the team who committed the fault must return one ball back to the ‘defending’ team.

If an opponent’s cup was knocked over accidentally, by a valid shot, the cup is refilled immediately, and is considered to be Dead, therefore must be drunken.

If a player knocks over one of his own team's cups then the cup must be refilled and is still considered to be Live.

Winners
The first team to eliminate all of their opponent's cups wins the match. The losing team must finish all of the remaining beverages in the cups left on the table. The next team up sets the table [They must fill all the cups, change the water in the rinse cups, and clean off any spilled beer on the table]. If both teams have only one cup remaining and both players shot goes in, the ball that went in first counts and that team is the winner. If the teams feel it is necessary, and they decide it’s a tie, they can replay the last two cups.

*Emergencies & Tips (For Midd. Students)

If you are in desperate need for cups, you can get standard blue Middlebury cups just about anywhere. Try The Grille if it’s really late (Open until 2am only) and help your self to a couple of cups, don’t go overboard, people need and use those cups.

If you need a table, they aren’t that hard to come by, we suggest building your own table from plywood and saw-horses. Plywood is readily available at construction sites. We suggest that once you have the table paint it, with whatever means you have, or the wood will rot really quickly.

The art department in Johnson may have some extra wood and materials (hammers, nails, etc) if you need to build the saw-horses.

Beer is easy to come by; there are two liquor stores in town, a supermarket, gas stations and several food-related businesses that sell beer. We suggest buying at the beer store by Greg’s Meat Market; it has the widest variety and better prices (although they’re about the same everywhere).
