League Information
Close-to-Home soccer is a league primarily for 30+ (born in 1978 or earlier) women, though we do include some like-minded under-30's. We formed this league as an alternative to the various eastern Massachusetts over-30 and over-40 "travel" leagues. We offer some things that the bigger leagues don't: flexibility, friendly but refereed games, balanced teams, minimal travel times, and Sunday afternoon (rather than morning) games. We play league games in the spring and fall; on holiday weekends and in the summer we have pickup games.
Teams are small to give everyone plenty of playing time. Skill-levels range from those just learning soccer, to former college players. Players are expected to be able to be at 80% of the games.
Games are 11x11, refereed, with two 45-minute halves.
We follow the F.I.F.A. "Laws of the Game" as modified by the local women's 30+ travel league. In particular, there is no slide tackling allowed.
Please feel free to contact Lynne Lori at [email protected] or 978-369-8149 if you have any questions.
You are a valued member of your team! If you can't play, let you team captains know; they'll try to get a sub for you.
Wear your team shirt, of course. If you are subbing on a team, they will have an extra shirt for you to use, or bring your own similar-color shirt: green for the Breakers, purple for the Concord Grapes, red for the Sirens, and yellow for Lightning. You also need to have shinguards covered with soccer socks in order to play. Cleats (no metal!) are highly recommended. Our ref will have you remove earrings, necklaces, and anything else that might be dangerous.
Bring lots of water! Bring the family; kids can help the ref by calling the lines.
We will make every effort to let you know of any changes as far in advance as possible. You will be called at least an hour in advance if there is a cancellation that day. Call your team captain(s) if you're not sure. Games will only be canceled if the weather makes a game truly unbearable or the field is closed and we cannot find an alternate field.
The Washington Area Women's Soccer League has a pretty good primer.
